16 September 2013 Term 3 Week 8 13/29

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Another Term Nearly Done
As the term comes to a close I have been reflecting on the definition of the much used word in education, “achievement” .When politicians talk about achievement they seem to have a very narrow view - reading, writing, ‘rithmetic and children as adults doing their bit for industry.

The Ministry of Education has a website which shows schools’ National Standards data. I must confess I have had a sneaky look but I resisted comparing our results with Opoho or George St!

As teachers we are determined that the education the children receive is far broader than the 3 x Rs - we are teaching skills as well as knowledge; we promote thinking and understanding; we nurture some community held beliefs, especially about how we treat each other; we encourage children to challenge, to take risks, to push themselves; we want them to be good, to feel good about themselves and to enjoy life.

So when we talk about how a child is achieving we don’t mean just in reading and writing; we are talking about their attitude and dispositions, about how they are progressing as a complex young person and how we are helping them make sense of the world.

Kia Kaha tatou Katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.
