24 September 2012    Term 3 Week 11    12/30
Dear Parents & Caregivers
 Kia ora koutou katoa

Some Reminders
Patience Please
I have noticed recently some impatient behaviour at the Longworth Street entrance - people stop to drop off or pick up children at the ½ turn-a-round then other cars come up behind and toot or drive aggressively.

Please be patient with fellow parents. Aggressive behaviour and aggressive driving is not only a poor example to children, it is also dangerous.

Here are some guidelines:
  • The turn-a-round is not a car park;
  • It is okay to drop off and pick up children at the turn-a-round but do not linger;
  • Do not bring vehicles onto the property, to drop off or collect children at the start and end of the day;
  • Be careful backing up as children shoot through the gate at a pace - you may not see them in your mirrors;
  • If another driver annoys you, keep calm; take an opportunity later to address the issue.
Road Patrol
The road patrol is traditionally supervised by parents. There are a few gaps in the roster currently so if you are able to be at school and take a patrol, please let Mrs Staynes know.

Keen on Some Training
Seasons for Growth is a programme for children and young people who have experienced loss of a significant person through death, separation or divorce. The NEV Education Council is keen to sponsor 2 or 3 locals to do the facilitation training. Interested? Leave your name at the school office. Dates for training: 23 and 24 November 2012.

Security Over the Holidays
Please contact First Security 0800347 787 if there is a security issue at school over the holidays. I suggest parents save this number on their mobile phones. The number is also on the 2012 fridge magnet.

On behalf of the staff I wish school families a restful and safe school holidays.

19 September 2012     Term 3 Week 10     12/29

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

I watched with interest the TV3 coverage of the Ouruhia School, one of the Christchurch schools put on notice by the Government to close. Ouruhia School has a special connection with us - Ouruhia is a ‘model’ school. Model schools are part of the normal schools network - they are normal schools with a specific role of providing a country school atmosphere for college teachers to experience.

The Government wants to close 2 of the 4 normal schools in Christchurch. (They also want to close 5 of the 11 intermediate schools there too). This is of concern to all normal schools.

What is of more concern is that schools like ours are very much central to their communities. Sadly, I don’t think community is part of the formula for closing schools. Yet it is such a vital component for children.

Our school is proudly a ‘community’ school. Our community would be horrified if the Government decided to close our school. What is happening in Christchurch is a reminder to us to keep up an interest in what is happening at school and in education generally in NZ.

NEV Normal has been part of NEV and the city for 160 years. Let’s ensure it continues to be important for many more years to come.

Our Thoughts
Our thoughts go to Karen Sintmaartensdijk, teacher of Room10, whose father died on the weekend. Mrs Staynes, Mrs Will and Mrs Evans-Weir will travel to the funeral which is in Oamaru on Thursday afternoon. Messages to Karen can be left at the office or sent to 9 Essex Street, Weston 9401.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

12 September 2012 Term 3 Week 9 12/28

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

What a funny old week we are having - shirt sleeves Monday morning and hats and gloves yesterday!

Some good news for schools this week amidst the variable weather was David Shearer’s announcements around Labour’s education policy. It is heartening to see the debate about our schooling system shift from the narrow discussion about assessment to the big issues like poverty.

I have worked in high and low decile schools. I have noticed that parents regardless of their station in life have high aspirations for their children. It is undoubtedly harder for poorer families to have their children as well equipped for learning as wealthier families. The reasons for this are many and complex.

Whatever the reason, we know that children who come from poorer homes are indeed disadvantaged when they come to school. Schools can make a difference - our school data for example shows after the first couple of years the playing field becomes much more level.

What is important though is that we firstly acknowledge that poverty does impact negatively on children's’ ability to learn. Secondly we must try and address the imbalance with a mix of in school and out of school interventions.

Schools must do their bit by targeting resources to the most needy; Governments must do their bit by ensuring good paying jobs for all; families must do their bit by selfless attention to the needs of their children and their neighbours’ children.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

5 September 2012     Term 3 Week 8      12/27

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Lessons Learnt
I have been away twice in the last two weeks; both times to Wellington. On my first excursion I joined a group of principals who were looking at high performing Wellington schools - whilst I came away inspired, I was reminded how lucky we are to have a school with spacious accommodation and grounds and a stable teaching team.

My second trip away was to attend the Normal Schools Conference. This is a highlight of my calendar as the Normal Schools principals are a pretty sharp bunch and I learn a lot from them. The theme this year was partnership and we had fruitful discussions with our respective partner universities.

The lessons I learnt from my time away are:
  • the rate of change in the world is speeding up - schools must keep up to date;
  • in keeping up, schools must not throw the baby out with the bath water!
That is: children need to be cared for first and foremost; children need to be prepared for a world we may not be able to visualise now; attitudes learnt are as important as stuff learnt.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.
