Newsletter 5 September 2012

5 September 2012     Term 3 Week 8      12/27

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Lessons Learnt
I have been away twice in the last two weeks; both times to Wellington. On my first excursion I joined a group of principals who were looking at high performing Wellington schools - whilst I came away inspired, I was reminded how lucky we are to have a school with spacious accommodation and grounds and a stable teaching team.

My second trip away was to attend the Normal Schools Conference. This is a highlight of my calendar as the Normal Schools principals are a pretty sharp bunch and I learn a lot from them. The theme this year was partnership and we had fruitful discussions with our respective partner universities.

The lessons I learnt from my time away are:
  • the rate of change in the world is speeding up - schools must keep up to date;
  • in keeping up, schools must not throw the baby out with the bath water!
That is: children need to be cared for first and foremost; children need to be prepared for a world we may not be able to visualise now; attitudes learnt are as important as stuff learnt.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie
Principal
