3 December 2012 Term 4 Week 8 12/38

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Education Outside the Classroom
Last week the Y6 children had a week of activities outside the normal classroom programme including; orienteering, bush walks, archery and bowling.

Some schools have school camps at this time of year for this age group. We do not run camps mainly because the children get their fair share of camping and adventure outings at intermediate and secondary school.

College Teachers
The staffroom is much quieter today as the college teachers have finished their practicum. The school has a statutory requirement to take college teachers. We see our role as a normal school as a way to positively influence the teachers of tomorrow. I would like to thank the usual classroom teachers, the children, other staff and the parents for supporting these young teacher apprentices as they learn their craft. It is important work which takes huge commitment from us all.

Not long now till Santa!

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

Principal

Return of School Books
Please ensure all school books - library, journal and readers are returned to school as soon as possible. The library will be closing and all books need to be returned for our annual stock take.

We are still missing a number of our sports tops. Please have a good look around home and school bags and return to school.

Final Prize Giving Assembly
The final assembly for the year will be held on Thursday 13 December at 11am to 12.30pm. We will be farewelling our Year 6 pupils and recognising contributions children have made during the year. The assembly will be held in the school hall. Following the assembly the children will be treated to a barbecue lunch provided by NZCU South.

Talent Quest
On the final day of term Friday 14 December, a talent quest will be held. It is open to all students, individuals and groups to perform in the areas of dance, drama, comedy, singing, or instrument. Please
discuss this with your child/ren and think about areas in which they might perform. Children are allowed to go home from 12.30pm on the last day.

Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal
We have had a fantastic response already! Our school is collecting gifts which will be distributed by the Salvation Army to families who are unable to afford Christmas gifts. Gifts may be left under the wishing tree in the school office.

School Activity Donation
Please ensure your child’s school activity donation is paid by the end of next week. Statements will be sent home giving outstanding balances. If you wish to pay by internet transfer the school’s account number is 03 1726 0055515 00.

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Welcoming New Families
We have had a number of enrolments lately, mostly for new entrants due to start in the new year but also some older children starting now.

I am reminded how important being welcomed and hospitable is to new families, particularly to those who are new to the Valley or to Dunedin.

I therefore ask parents who have been with us for a while to make a special effort to welcome the new faces in the school. Maybe it is time for a Friday coffee session in the staffroom?

Let’s make our new families welcome to the school and the community.

Dental Service
I am meeting with the head of the new dental service to schools on Thursday. If you have any feedback
regarding this new system let me know so I can address issues with her. Leave a message at the office, or email me on office@nevn.school.nz

Board of Trustees
Next year sees the triennial Board of Trustees elections. The Board are keen to see some ‘new blood’ on the governing group. If you are interested, talk to one of the Board members or to me.

The other Board members are Steve O’Connor, George O’Brien, Jesseme Jones, AJ Woodhouse and Karen Sintmaartensdijk..

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
Several children contracted this disease recently. The Public Health nurse advises that it is a mild viral illness. Children may have a fever and feel unwell for a couple of days with a sore throat and flu like symptoms. Small blisters may be seen in the mouth and on the palms and fingers of hands and soles of feet. It is spread through direct contact with nose and throat secretions and the faeces of an infected person. Coughing may also spread the disease.

Time between exposure and sickness is 3-5 days. The child is infectious while unwell. The virus may be excreted in faeces for weeks after the child has recovered.

Keep children at home while they are unwell, give them plenty to drink and soft food to eat if they have blisters in their mouth. Pamol may be given to reduce fever. Wash hands frequently.

Rainbow Class
Our transition to school class for 4 years olds will be held this Thursday from 1.15 to 2.45pm in R11.

Assembly
Assembly will be held in the hall on Friday at 2.20pm. It will be led by R10 with items by R11.

Scholastic Book Club
Leaflets for Issue 8 have been sent home. Orders with money need to be into the office by Wednesday 28 November. If paying by cheque please make payable to Scholastic NZ.

Wheels Day
This Friday lunchtime is the turn of the senior classes to ride bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Flippaball Results
Our flippaball teams played on Sunday. Out teams had a win, a loss and a draw. The Blue team won 9 goals to 2; the Gold team drew 4 all and the Silver team lost 4 goals to 6. Players of the day were Macauley, Charlotte and Molly.

Dental Therapy Clinic at the School of Dentistry
As we near the end of clinics for 2012 we realise that not all children will receive an examination appointment this year.

This has occurred due to the rearrangement of schools and clinics in the Southern DHB Community Oral Health Service, and the adoption of a new computer system for the Service.

You can be assured that we have not forgotten your children and they will be seen as early as possible next year.

However, if you have any concerns about your children’s oral health please contact Donna as soon as possible on 479 7189 to arrange an appointment.

13 November 2012    Term 4 Week 5    12/34

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Teacher Union Meetings
The primary teachers’ union, the NZEI, is holding meetings across the country to brief teachers about the latest pay round. Some schools have closed for these meetings but we have managed to stay open by spreading out the staff attendance over 2 meetings and with help from part time and management staff.

Thanks to all those who have stepped up to help out - it makes it much less hassle for parents if we can manage it this way.

Friday Book Character Day
The idea for dressing up as a book character is that children and parents create a costume as much as possible from what already exists in the home, so please don’t head off and spend money on this
activity.

Also the character should be from a book not from TV, movie or a game.

Novopay
Parents will have heard about the problems schools have been experiencing with the new school staff payroll system. The stories on the TV and the paper are not exaggerated and our operation has had and continues to have issues with payment of staff. Whilst teething problems are sure to be expected, the new system has been nothing short of a nightmare for our office manager. Let’s hope the Ministry improve things for the new year!

Welcome
Welcome to Kainamu who has started in R11. We welcome his family to our school community.

School Swimming Block
There were several items of lost property handed into the office after school swimming - vests, undies sox and tights.

Flippaball Results
Our flippaball teams played on Sunday. Mrs Hesson reports that all 3 games were lost but again the
children played very well.

5 Minute Car Parks in Longworth Street
Please respect the 5 minute parks in Longworth Street. We have had reports that some parents are waiting in these parks for some time when picking children up after school.

Wheels Day
This Friday lunchtime is the turn of the junior classes to ride bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Hospice Mural
Simon Kaan and other artists worked with a group of children on Friday creating a collage which will be used as part of a mural at the hospice. The children created Pacific turtles, Asian dragons and Maori
tuatara.

Hiwi the Kiwi Fishing Show
Children and staff thoroughly enjoyed this show presented by the Minstrel and Mrs Minstrel. Its theme was fishing and being safe around the water & the sustainability of resources from the sea.

Public Health Nurse Information

Bed Times
Children need a good night’s sleep so that they have enough energy for the next day’s activities. Sleep is not only necessary for bodies it is important for our brains. Children cannot fight colds and viruses when they are tired. Research has shown links between lack of sleep and learning and behaviour problems in school age children.

Rather than appearing tired, children who do not get enough sleep at night may display the opposite signs, bouncing around, being unable to concentrate, losing interest quickly and even becoming uncooperative, irritable and angry.

Children may not be a good judge of how much sleep they need; they may not recognise they are tired. Children of primary school age may require 11 or 12 hour’s sleep. Suggested bedtimes for 5 to 11 year olds are 7pm to 8. 30pm. Generally 12 years old needs only 10 hours. A good bedtime routine will help.

If parents are having difficulty with the children’s bedtime routines they can discuss these with the local public health nurse or GP.

The Public Health Nurse for our school is: Catherine Moir, Phone 4769748.

24 September 2012    Term 3 Week 11    12/30
Dear Parents & Caregivers
 Kia ora koutou katoa

Some Reminders
Patience Please
I have noticed recently some impatient behaviour at the Longworth Street entrance - people stop to drop off or pick up children at the ½ turn-a-round then other cars come up behind and toot or drive aggressively.

Please be patient with fellow parents. Aggressive behaviour and aggressive driving is not only a poor example to children, it is also dangerous.

Here are some guidelines:
  • The turn-a-round is not a car park;
  • It is okay to drop off and pick up children at the turn-a-round but do not linger;
  • Do not bring vehicles onto the property, to drop off or collect children at the start and end of the day;
  • Be careful backing up as children shoot through the gate at a pace - you may not see them in your mirrors;
  • If another driver annoys you, keep calm; take an opportunity later to address the issue.
Road Patrol
The road patrol is traditionally supervised by parents. There are a few gaps in the roster currently so if you are able to be at school and take a patrol, please let Mrs Staynes know.

Keen on Some Training
Seasons for Growth is a programme for children and young people who have experienced loss of a significant person through death, separation or divorce. The NEV Education Council is keen to sponsor 2 or 3 locals to do the facilitation training. Interested? Leave your name at the school office. Dates for training: 23 and 24 November 2012.

Security Over the Holidays
Please contact First Security 0800347 787 if there is a security issue at school over the holidays. I suggest parents save this number on their mobile phones. The number is also on the 2012 fridge magnet.

On behalf of the staff I wish school families a restful and safe school holidays.

19 September 2012     Term 3 Week 10     12/29

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

I watched with interest the TV3 coverage of the Ouruhia School, one of the Christchurch schools put on notice by the Government to close. Ouruhia School has a special connection with us - Ouruhia is a ‘model’ school. Model schools are part of the normal schools network - they are normal schools with a specific role of providing a country school atmosphere for college teachers to experience.

The Government wants to close 2 of the 4 normal schools in Christchurch. (They also want to close 5 of the 11 intermediate schools there too). This is of concern to all normal schools.

What is of more concern is that schools like ours are very much central to their communities. Sadly, I don’t think community is part of the formula for closing schools. Yet it is such a vital component for children.

Our school is proudly a ‘community’ school. Our community would be horrified if the Government decided to close our school. What is happening in Christchurch is a reminder to us to keep up an interest in what is happening at school and in education generally in NZ.

NEV Normal has been part of NEV and the city for 160 years. Let’s ensure it continues to be important for many more years to come.

Our Thoughts
Our thoughts go to Karen Sintmaartensdijk, teacher of Room10, whose father died on the weekend. Mrs Staynes, Mrs Will and Mrs Evans-Weir will travel to the funeral which is in Oamaru on Thursday afternoon. Messages to Karen can be left at the office or sent to 9 Essex Street, Weston 9401.

Newsletter 12 Sepetember 2012

12 September 2012 Term 3 Week 9 12/28

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

What a funny old week we are having - shirt sleeves Monday morning and hats and gloves yesterday!

Some good news for schools this week amidst the variable weather was David Shearer’s announcements around Labour’s education policy. It is heartening to see the debate about our schooling system shift from the narrow discussion about assessment to the big issues like poverty.

I have worked in high and low decile schools. I have noticed that parents regardless of their station in life have high aspirations for their children. It is undoubtedly harder for poorer families to have their children as well equipped for learning as wealthier families. The reasons for this are many and complex.

Whatever the reason, we know that children who come from poorer homes are indeed disadvantaged when they come to school. Schools can make a difference - our school data for example shows after the first couple of years the playing field becomes much more level.

What is important though is that we firstly acknowledge that poverty does impact negatively on children's’ ability to learn. Secondly we must try and address the imbalance with a mix of in school and out of school interventions.

Schools must do their bit by targeting resources to the most needy; Governments must do their bit by ensuring good paying jobs for all; families must do their bit by selfless attention to the needs of their children and their neighbours’ children.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

5 September 2012     Term 3 Week 8      12/27

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Lessons Learnt
I have been away twice in the last two weeks; both times to Wellington. On my first excursion I joined a group of principals who were looking at high performing Wellington schools - whilst I came away inspired, I was reminded how lucky we are to have a school with spacious accommodation and grounds and a stable teaching team.

My second trip away was to attend the Normal Schools Conference. This is a highlight of my calendar as the Normal Schools principals are a pretty sharp bunch and I learn a lot from them. The theme this year was partnership and we had fruitful discussions with our respective partner universities.

The lessons I learnt from my time away are:
  • the rate of change in the world is speeding up - schools must keep up to date;
  • in keeping up, schools must not throw the baby out with the bath water!
That is: children need to be cared for first and foremost; children need to be prepared for a world we may not be able to visualise now; attitudes learnt are as important as stuff learnt.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.
