28 May 2012   Term 2 Week 6  12/15

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa
Last Wednesday at about 3.15pm I happened to go to the school hall for some reason. As I approached the hall I heard a group of boys, mostly from DNI, who were skating by the school archway using foul language. I growled at these boys and they took off (not without a bit of cheek too!). I noticed some adults about at the time and wondered why they hadn’t also told these boys to watch their language.

If you see children swearing or misbehaving before or after school please correct them - if they are cheeky in response, let one of the teachers know and we will follow up on it. If, as in this case, the children come from another school, I will contact the principal of that school to complain.

Adults challenging such behaviour reinforces for children that we live in a community; that we have commonly held values; that we are connected and look our for each other. If we don’t correct children (or each other for that matter), we give tacit approval to misbehaviour.

Swimming Block Results: JC Swim School Report

It is well documented that New Zealand's drowning toll is a disgrace. At three times the per-capita rate of the United Kingdom and Canada and twice that of Australia, it remains the ugly stain on our acclaimed aquatic wonderland status. JC Swim is committed to ensuring children will have a greater chance of survival through a well structured learn to swim programme. We give the children the opportunity to fall into water, eliminating the shock incident and teach good technique in all strokes to ensure children can gain distance. We also applaud your commitment to ensuring your children have the opportunity to learn water safety skills.

Non confident swimmers were taught breath control, float coordination, independence-whole-stroke. Floaters practiced basic techniques in freestyle and backstroke for retention. Beginner breathers developed the whole stroke and advanced swimmers were taught breaststroke and improved freestyle and back stroke through a technique and endurance programme.

Individual swimmers results are marked on the evaluation sheets. Thank you for participating in our programme.

21 May 2012   Term 2 Week 5   12/14

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa
Last week I attended a lunchtime lecture at the university entitled “Are we educating boys for war and girls for peace?”. The talk was given by Dr Birgit Brocke-Utne who hails from the University of Oslo and is visiting professor at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies.

All over the world boys and girls are socialised differently. Boys have higher status than girls in many societies. The books, toys, magazines, films, computer games and sports that children engage in are different for boys and girls. Dr Birgit asks what this means for their relationship to violence and non-violence and their attitudes to war and violent aggression.

I found this lecture stimulating both as a parent and as an educator. It challenged me to consider more carefully the way we deal with issues of conflict in school. Regardless of our beliefs - whether we have traditional or feminist views about this issue - I am certain that all of us want to promote peace and peacefulness to our children. And if we indeed subscribe to this ideal then the notion of an ‘eye for an eye’ and solving conflict with conflict should not be part of the way we deal with our children. Easily said but a worthy aspiration.

Peace!

Topical Issues
I watched with interest (and a high level of annoyance) the Secretary for Treasury Gabriel Makhlouf on TV recently suggesting that one way to save the country money and lift educational achievement was to increase class sizes.

I called Treasury and asked to speak to Mr Makhlouf but was unsuccessful. I wanted to tell him that he was wrong and that increasing class size would put too much pressure on already overstressed children, teachers and school administrators.

John Clark, Associate Professor at Massey University replied more eloquently than me ...“if the socioeconomic background of a student is the major cause of success and failure in school achievement, how is it possible that quality teaching … could have any significant causal effect on patterns of achievement. …. Solutions will flow when the root causes are addressed and this will only happen if the debate is broadened from within-school factors to include beyond-school factors, especially those government policies which produce poverty and how poverty in turn impacts on families and their children’s learning at school”. Newsletter 7 May 2012

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Today marked a new chapter in the delivery of oral health care to our children. Our dental clinic was decommissioned last year and henceforth our children will receive their dental attention at the Dental School.

We made a considerable fuss when the DHB closed our clinic so in response the DHB has provided our children with transport to and from the appointments.

Today saw the first group of children bundled off to experience the new way. I am pleased to report that all seems to have gone well. We will keep a close eye on the new system and if necessary will challenge the DHB to ensure it works well for our children.

Did you know that families who hold a community services card can get specs for children for free? One of our school mums works at OPSM in town and wants everyone to know about the scheme that pays for children’s glasses if parents cannot afford to pay for them. Talk to Mrs Lindsay for further
information.
