Dear Parents & Caregivers

Positive Behaviour for Learning
NEV Normal is one of four local school invited by the Ministry of Education to introduce an American behaviour management system into local schools.

The first day of training was yesterday at the regional offices of the Ministry. All of our senior team attended and we were very impressed with what we saw. Mrs Staynes will lead the introduction of this initiative.

This behaviour system started in a very rough school in the States - at that school the principal had an armed guard on hand at all times! - and the approach turned the school around.

The Government has sponsored the introduction of the scheme into NZ schools because of the rise in behaviour problems evident in our schools.

We enjoy pretty good behaviour from most of our children but there is always room for improvement. Parents will be briefed further about how this new system will work in our school. The implementation will take 3 years.

Random Act Of Kindness Day
Today is Random Act of Kindness Day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many parents who show our children kindness. Often parents will notice children at school are in need of a warm jacket or some new shoes and the next thing these items turn up. I’ve seen teachers and other staff do the same. Thanks!

I have notices that there are a few families really struggling to make ends meet lately. The school has some strategies in place to help children and families in need so please let us know if we can help.

Ma te Atua e mannaaki tiaki tatau katoa.

Breakfast – simple, low-cost and healthy!
For a typical person the longest duration of time that passes between meals is from dinner (or that after dinner snack) until breakfast the following morning. Our bodies are like a machine that needs to be refuelled regularly and the more time that passes between meals the less effective our bodies will perform.

Breakfast at home is a healthy, low-cost way to help your children grow strong and be ready to learn. Some simple breakfast options are toast with spreads, cereal such as wheat biscuits with milk or rolled oats/porridge with milk.

To obtain any resources or advice on healthy eating and the importance of breakfast talk to your schools public health nurse.

24 August 2010Term 3 Week 6 10/25

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

As I write the painters are scraping away on the window sills outside my office! Sometimes we have to put up with a bit of discomfort to enjoy the benefits of change.

The senior classes are now enjoying their refreshed and refurbished classrooms. The children and teachers alike have patiently endured the noise and disruption that has come with the building work. Now they can settle back into their permanent
learning spaces.

The senior block has not only been refurbished but has been strengthened to meet modern earthquake standards and has had all rot and leaks repaired. These blocks are over 40 years old so well overdue a bit of attention! The College Block, which includes the library, should be ready for occupation mid way through next term.

Other things to look forward to: -
The bilingual class - starting next term on a trial basis has already 9 children registered.
The Kapa Haka uniforms have arrived and they look spectacular - thanks to the PTA and the BoT who shared the cost of these! The Poly Festival is scheduled for September 9th.
A teacher has been appointed to teach the Gifted Kids Classes which we have agreed to host from 2011. This exciting city-wide project will have positive spin-offs for our children.
Plans have been submitted to move the two older classrooms which house the community project, to the back of the car park and to then re-gable the front of the hall. We are hoping to have this project completed by April 2011 at which time we celebrate the school’s 160th birthday.
New entrant enrolments have been strong lately and we have had a number of unexpected enrolments in the upper school.

Ma te Atua e mannaaki tiaki tatau katoa.

Board of Trustees News
National Standards
Further to my letter sent home on Friday regarding National Standards reporting, I wish to let parents/caregivers know that the Board is continuing to work through how we report to parents in a safe and helpful manner.

We are currently discussing: -
The best ways to inform parents of the issues of concern that have been raised.
The best way to consult parents before and after we send home the first National Standards reports.

We welcome your feedback at anytime and we hope you will engage in the more formal processes of consultation that the BOT initiates.

Respiratory Hygiene
Term Three is usually when we get winter illnesses so here is another reminder about the importance of respiratory hygiene.

As one way of preventing the spread of viruses we are teaching children to cough and sneeze into their elbows or alternatively to cough and sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away. Also always remember to wash your hands after every time you sneeze or cough.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

National Standards Testing
The ODT reported today that our school is not producing a mid year report as a protest against the Government policy on National Standards. This is not the case.
We do not usually publish a mid-year written report;
The Board of Trustees asked the teachers to prepare a trial mid-year report based on the National Standards; the teachers did so;
These reports do not accurately portray the children’s achievement;
The Board of Trustees decided they should not be published because of the teachers’ concerns about then;
The Board of Trustees have written to the Secretary of Education explaining why these reports will not be published and asking for her comment.

So, the reports have not been sent home because they are not seen as useful, not as a protest! Most principals I know are experiencing similar problems as they find the National Standards levels do not match other more reliable and tested assessment tools. Until these ‘mismatches’ are sorted, the worth of the Standards will continue to be debated.

Hopefully, someone in Wellington will see sense and go back to the drawing board with these standards and either chuck them out altogether, or reset them using more reliable processes.

Behaviour Initiative
The Ministry of Education have invited NEV Normal to be part of a small pilot scheme
introducing an American behaviour model into NZ schools. We need a couple of parent volunteers to be part of this pilot. It will require attendance at training during the day for 1 or 2 days every now and then. If you are interested, please leave you name with Sara at the office.

Bilingual Class Trial
During Term 4 we will trial a bilingual class in the afternoons. Mrs Kewene-Edwards will teach this class. Parents who wish their child to attend should register at the office. Mrs Kewene-Edwards class will be covered by other teachers during this trial period.

Maths-a-thon fundraising cards need to be back to the classrooms by this Thursday 19th. The test will be held on Friday 20th. Next PTA Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday September 14th at 3.15pm in the Parents Room. Please feel free to come along and join in.

Hand washing
The spread of illness is most common in the third term of the school year. This is a reminder of the importance of hand washing. Children who wash their hands regularly have fewer sick days with colds and flu’s, and less time off with ‘tummy bugs’.

It takes 20 seconds to wash your hands properly and teaching children to get into a habit of washing their hands will help control the spread of disease. Hand drying is also very important as wet hands will attract bugs like a magnet.

During Friday's assembly a group of the peer mediators spoke to the students about some matters of concern they had.

Peer mediators are senior children chosen by the staff and their peers to mediate issues in the playground during breaks.

The mediators are taught not to be little teachers but to be big brothers and sisters. They are encouraged to promote good relations amongst the student body and to take particular care with the youngest and those who are shy or unassertive.

The current mediators are: - Jorja, Latiesha, Jaani, Briana, Liam, Reuben, Cyprus, Ben and Jack B.

H1N1 Flu Virus Situation
We have received this information from the Ministry of Education regarding the current situation with Swine Flu, HIN1.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) reports that there is an increase in the numbers of people with H1N1 flu virus. They don’t expect a repeat of last year’s situation, nor do they expect the MOH will be recommending that schools and early childhood centres are closed.

A high percentage, nearly 50%, of under 20 year-olds have had the H1N1 flu virus so should now have some natural immunity. There has also been a high rate of vaccination. However, some schools are experiencing very high absences. These tend to be in areas where there weren’t as many cases last year.

The symptoms include a high temperature, chills, headache, nausea and some vomiting and diarrhoea.

MOH is reminding everyone to repeat last year’s intensive prevention measures. These are:practice good hygiene – wash and dry your hands regularly, and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing; stay home if you are sick; phone your doctor or HealthLine for advice.

People with pre-existing health conditions and pregnant women need to be particularly careful and seek medical advice early if they have flu symptoms.

Bus Services for Children
People ask from time to time whether primary children have access to the Ministry of Education subsidised buses. Herewith is the current situation.

Currently a Ministry organised bus travels from Waitati via Mt Cargill Road to the city to transport secondary students.

Primary school children who live beyond Doug Hall’s property on North Road are eligible to board this bus free of charge and be dropped at NEV Normal. These children are classed as ‘eligible’ for the school bus.

Children who do not live beyond this point are able to catch this bus but must pay - it is one section.

Children who bypass their closest local school, regardless of where they live are not eligible for any subsidised or free school bus travel.
