On behalf of the staff I would like to wish all our school families a happy Easter and a restful and safe school holidays.

Senior & College Block Structural Strengthening
The structural strengthening and refurbishment of the senior classroom block will commence after Easter. The senior classes will be relocated for Term 2. Room 5 will move to the library, R3 will move to the seminar room in the College block and R2 will move to R13 next door to R11. While this work will mean disruption to the classes and teachers it also means a long awaited update for the senior block. It is anticipated that the work on the College block will commence in Term 3. In addition, the outside of the Harley Block is to be repainted during Term 2.

PTA
Yesterday the PTA held their AGM. The staff and children appreciate the hard work that this group does in the school. Last year over $7,000 was raised for the school which went towards offsetting the cost of the swimming block and buying resources and funding extra activities. We are lucky to have such a supportive group which really makes a difference for our children.

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Mrs Staynes has been testing all children for reading and maths on their birthdays. This allows us to keep an eye on reading and maths levels across the school.

Mrs Staynes told me a neat story today that one child told her: this child’s parents read to her every night and the father reads a different book to her than the mother.

It is really important for a child’s learning to be read to regularly - research shows that boys progress better if they are read to by an adult male!

Family life is busy especially at dinner time and often parents don’t make time to read to their children. Sometimes setting a regular time, say 6.30pm, is a way of ensuring a system develops.

Even if reading to your child can only happen in weekends, be assured it will greatly benefit your child’s reading progress.

Recent Proposed DHB Plans
I was dismayed to see the DHB plan to cut spending to the elderly. In the space of only 2 weeks we have heard that home help for those living independently may be halved while there may also be a stand down of 6 months for entry into rest homes.

A number of families rely on caregiver work in the Valley. These DHB changes will undoubtedly have an affect on those families.

These changes also have the potential to lower the quality of life for the elderly in our community.

I reckon the quality of services provided the old and the young are a sign of whether or not we are a caring society. If we short change the young or the old, we are short changing the most vulnerable in our society.

We should always stand up for the vulnerable - if we don’t what message are we giving our children about how to be caring citizens?

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

A bag of scientific equipment has gone missing following the senior syndicate trip to Lindsay Creek and the Botanic Gardens last month. The bag contained at least 20 magnifying glasses and 20 3D viewers. The magnifying glasses are red with blue cases and the 3D viewers are white cube shaped. Please look for these items at home. Teachers are upset that these items have disappeared as this resource has been built up over a number of years. It will mean additional cost to the school if these items have to be replaced.

On a more positive note, it was great to see the turnout at the cross country last week. The children certainly gave it a good go and we saw some great running. Well done!

Spring Bulb Fundraiser
We are pleased to be able to offer you this exciting fundraising venture. As we do not have enough catalogues for all families we have put one catalogue in each classroom for you to have a look at. If you (or anyone you know of) are interested in buying some bulbs please go to the office and collect a catalogue to take away. Bulbs can be planted up until the end of May at least.

Orders for both fundraisers need to be into the office by Friday 26th of March. Please make any cheques payable to North East Valley Normal PTA.

Community Orchard - 1000 Fruit and Nut Trees: Transition Valley 473 has received some funding to start planting fruit and nut trees as part of our Community Orchard - 1000 Fruit and Nut Trees Project. We have identified the following areas of public land in North East Valley as places where trees could be planted for harvesting by the community:Pentland Street Playground; The unformed section of Arnold Street; Lennox Street; Between Calder Ave and Buchanan Street and Chingford Park. We have already consulted with the Dunedin City Council and have obtained expert advice on suitable species to plant. We are now in the process of consulting people who live near these areas. If this is you, please tell us what you think. Tell us what you know about the site. Please share your local knowledge. In the long term we would love to have local people involved in the ongoing care of the trees in their neighbourhood, and plan to hold future workshops about tree care (including pruning), and preserving fruit. If there is support for the proposed plantings from people living in each of these areas, we will hold community workshops to prepare for planting, and to plant the trees, between April and June this year. For more information, to provide feedback, or to get involved, please contact Philippa, the Community Orchard Coordinator on 473 9293.
