26 May 2010 Term 2 Week 6 10/15

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

School Closure
Many thanks to all parents for the speedy response to the news the school needed to close yesterday.

The problem was that the drainage system could not cope with the extra rain water and the inability of the school sewer to drain into the over stretched street drains. The DCC have been here today and all looks good.

The evacuation of children took nearly 2½hours. Some parents and their back-up people were unable to be contacted. This is a good time to review and update these contacts.

It is important that we have two emergency contact people who live close to the school and who have the availability to collect children. Perhaps one emergency contact could be another school parent. Please pop into the office and check your details with Sara and update if necessary.

Marae Visit
We are off to Puke Te Raki Marae in Karitane next Thursday. Parents are very welcome to accompany us but need to book a seat on the bus before this Friday. Please let Sara know if you wish to travel with us.

Bedtime and Sleeping
Children need a good night’s sleep so that they have enough energy for the next days activities. Sleep is important for our brains as well as our bodies. Children cannot fight colds and viruses when they are tired.

Children may not be a good judge of how much sleep they need, as they may not recognise they are tired. Children of primary school age may require 11 or 12 hours sleep. Suggested bedtimes for 5 to 11 year olds are 7 pm to 8.30 pm. Generally 12 year olds need only 10 hours. A good bedtime routine will help.

If parents are having difficulty with the children’s bedtime routines they can discuss these with the local public health nurse or Plunket nurse.

College Teachers
Usually the University send us post graduate college teachers to work alongside our teachers.

Lately we have had first year teachers in the school, 2 to each classroom.

I often think how lucky we are to have the college teachers working at school - it means another set of helping hands in the classrooms. It also means a fresher face in front of the children. It is so nice to see a group of keen and energetic young people interacting with our children. They complement our experienced and wise teaching staff.

We were especially proud to host two former pupils, Brittany Wright and Willow Duffy, in this last group of trainees. They will make wonderful teachers and are an inspiration to our pupils and a credit to their families, the Valley and their teachers.

Establishment of a Bi-lingual Class

The Whanau of NEV Normal School has been on a journey for the last 18 months looking at ways to better provide a Te Reo Maori option at our school. Part of this journey has included hui with Paulette and Komene. Two of our Whanau visited a successful 3 class bi-lingual unit at St Albans School in Christchurch.

As a consequence of this discernment process the Whanau of NEV Normal School plan to establish a bi-lingual Te Reo Maori/English class at the school.

The Whanau have an experienced senior teacher lined up for this position. The school has identified a classroom for the unit and is fully committed to this project.

The kaupapa of the class is currently being developed but will be based on the successful and long established St Albans School, Christchurch model.

The Whanau need at least 14 tamariki to make the class viable and therefore seek expressions of interest from parents of primary aged children who may wish to enrol their child in this class.

The start date of this class is dependent upon the response to this panui but could be as early as Term 4 2010.

The establishment of this class is not in competition to the Kura o Otepoti and it is hoped our involvement in the One Day School will continue.

Please contact the school office to lodge your interest in this exciting proposal.

COUGHING AND SNEEZING
Did you know that viruses travel about 6 metres when you sneeze, and 3 metres when you cough! These days, as one-way of preventing the spread of viruses, we are teaching children to cough and sneeze into their elbows or alternatively to cough or sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away. This is a good practice to get into as well as cleaning hands after every time you cough or sneeze.

Hand Washing
Washing hands kills germs but how much difference does it make to a child’s health? Children who wash their hands regularly have fewer sick days with colds and flu’s, and less time off with ‘tummy bugs’.

Teach children to get into the habit of hand washing to help control the spread of disease. If your child is a reluctant hand washer, liquid soap (from a pump) may be more fun. It takes 20 seconds to wash your hands properly … that’s the same time it takes to sing ‘happy birthday to me’ twice.

Drying your hands is very important too, as wet hands attract bugs like a magnet.

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

The new Board of Trustees held their first meeting last night. It was a welcome and orientation meeting with former Board Chair Mike Wright invited to speak about ways of running an effective Board.

At the close of nominations four nominations had been received for the five parent representative positions. These four people were then duly elected as parent representatives. They are:
Steve O’Connor, who has been elected Chair of the new board. Steve is a former pastor of the NEV Baptist Church and now is electorate secretary for Labour MP Claire Curran. Steve has 2 sons at NEV Normal, Jack in R5 and Cameron in R2. Steve has been a board member since 2004.

Jo Howard has been a board member since 2007. Her daughter Celeste is in R5. Jo divides her time between working as a potter and working as a librarian on the book bus.

Jesseme Jones has been a board member since 2009. She has a preschool aged daughter and her son Oliver is in R2. Jesseme was active on the last board promoting the establishment of the parents meeting room in the hall and liaising with agencies to make available information displayed in this room.

The board welcomed new member Paul McDowell. Paul’s daughter Silva is in R2. Paul is an English teacher at Otago Boys’ High School.

Other members of the board are John McKenzie, as principal, and a staff representative yet to be appointed. The vacant parent representative position will be discussed at the next meeting to be held on Monday 24 May. A farewell to retiring board members will be held at this meeting.
