29 July 2009 Term 3 Week 2 09/22
Dear Parents & Caregivers
Tena koutou te Whanau

Condolences
By now most families will have heard the sad news that one of our parents, Jimi Bates, father of Emilly (year 5), has died. Emilly has spent most of her life in Jimi’s sole care and we extend our deepest sympathy to Emilly and her family. Jimi is well known to our staff and many of our families and his death has been a shock to us all. A number of Emilly’s school friends are keen to attend the funeral which will be on Thursday at Hope & Sons at 11.00am.

Families who wish to make a donation to Emilly and her family can do so at the school office.

“Don't be dismayed at goodbyes, a farewell is necessary before you can meet again and meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends”. Richard Bach

Congratulations
Life seems often to have a way of displaying its remarkable balancing act! This week, as we learnt of the death of a parent, we had the joy of meeting an addition to another school family – Kiki, a new wee sister for Eli and Cyprus. Thanks Kirsty and Carlos for bringing your special bundle of joy into our classrooms for the staff and students to have a cuddle!

Newsletter 21 July 2009

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Tena koutou te Whanau

Welcome back to the new term.

State of the School
Over the holidays there was hardly any vandalism and no graffiti drawn at school. This is great! A local teenager (who did not attend NEV Normal thank goodness) was caught trying to unscrew door handles a fortnight before the end of last term. He is currently under the supervision of the Police Youth-aid section. We have had our security firm doing spot checks on the property since then. I ask again for a concerted effort by all to keep an eye on the place to ensure vandals and thieves are dissuaded from targeting our school.

Swine Flu
When Michael Jackson died we heard nothing but Michael Jackson news for days. So too the swine flu! Who knows how or when this pandemic might hit us hard. All I can say is we should continue to observe stringent hygiene practices in our homes and at school. If your child has a cold or the flu, do what you would normally do and keep them home till they come right. So far so good though – yesterday we had only two sickness related absences.

Dental Review
One of our parents has discovered that there is
currently a review of the plans to restructure the school dental service. I find it sad that this review is not advertised widely. If you want to make your views known, contact Ms Mirren Peterson, Oral Health Manager, Otago DHB, Box 5144 Moray Place, phone 4799569, mirrenp@healthyotago.co.nz

Complaints or Concerns
I was talking to a school family today about concerns they have about their child. I was happy to do so and pointed out to them that we are always pleased to discuss a child’s progress with the parents. Teachers usually make themselves available in their classrooms for parents from 8.30 till the morning bell. Appointments can always be organised by speaking directly to the teachers or through the school office. If you speak to the teacher and are not satisfied with the response, feel free to see me or Mrs. Staynes.
Serious matters can always come straight to the
senior staff.
