9 December 2009 Term 4 Week 9 09/38

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Important Notice - Change of Dates
The last day of school this term is now Thursday 17 December.

When school dates were decided upon last year, we had not decided on the use of our 2teacher only days. As a consequence our dates are incorrect.

Therefore, the school finish date for this year should be Wednesday the 16th December. This oversight has only been discovered this week. A number of parents have organised time off work to attend the end of year celebration on Thursday. Therefore we have decided to finish school lunchtime on Thursday the 17th.

The talent quest set down for Friday will now be held from 1.30pm on Wednesday the 16th.

Any parents who are unable to organise care for their children because of these changes can arrange with the school office to send them to school on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Please inform Sara on 473 8246 if you require this service.

My sincere apologies for any disruption this may cause.

NEV Christmas Fiesta
The school will have a BBQ operating at the
Christmas party. All children will receive a ticket on Friday which they can cash in for a free sausage at the party. Others can purchase a sausage for a gold coin donation. Volunteers to ‘man’ the BBQ please contact the school office.

Self Defence Course for Girls
Y3 & Y4 girls participated in a self defence course this week. Their tutor, Ana, taught them about being strong and using strong voices and actions to keep themselves safe.

Reminders
School Donations: There is currently over $1300 in unpaid activity donations. A statement has been sent home with this newsletter if your child’s activity donation has not been paid in full. This money is used to pay the cost of swimming, visits outside the school in support of curriculum learning, visiting performers at the school. It would be appreciated if you could try and contribute something! The school manages its finances very carefully and yet always ends the year on deficit!

Lost Property
As usual there is an overflowing bin of lost property
under the stairs between Rooms 2 & 3. Items will be put out in front of classes for children to check. Any items left at the end of the year will be disposed of.

1 December 2009 Term 4 Week 8 09/35

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa
Farewells and Congratulations
Last week we farewelled Mrs. Navaratne who has worked as an ESOL assistant at our school. Mrs. Navaratne’s family is moving away from Dunedin. In the next couple of weeks we will also farewell Ms. Victoria Cooper and Mrs. Pauline Carnegie both of whom have worked as teacher assistants alongside the teaching staff to support our children. Ms Cooper is going back to University to train as a teacher and Mrs Carnegie’s contract comes to an end. We are grateful to these dedicated and reliable staff members who work hard for us and our children.

We congratulate Ms. Tracy Ballantine on her recent appointment as a permanent teacher at NEV Normal. Tracy has been on a fixed term contract for two years but the Board decided the strengthening school roll meant we could offer the position as a permanent one so the job was advertised and Tracy has been appointed to the job. We offer our congratulations to Tracy and wish her all the best for her time in the Valley!

One Day Te Reo School
Dunedin schools and Maori whanau have agreed to trial a ‘one day te reo Maori’ initiative in 2010. Children selected will attend a total immersion experience one day a week. The one day school will start out at DNI and will be staffed by trained
teachers who are fluent speakers of Te Reo Maori. For further information contact paulette@ngaitahu.iwi.nz Application forms are available at the school office.
