Threats to Small Schools in New Zealand
In her re-organisation of Christchurch schools, Minister Parata has closed a number of small sized schools and created larger schools. In one case primary and intermediate schools were joined with a secondary school to create a ‘super school’. So it means that 5 year olds attend the same campus as 17 year olds.

70% of NZ schools are small - with less than 150 pupils. Small schools are costlier to run because of the economies of scale. It is logical to consider combining schools to save money, especially in tight fiscal times. Super schools, super cities - it all sounds very sensible.

What of the children though? Barker and Gump in their research “Big School, small school: High school Size and Student Behaviour” summarise the advantages of smallness thus: “Students are the centre of the school. Discipline is usually not a serious problem, thereby resulting in an increase in time spent learning. Teachers still have a sense of control over what and how they teach. A minimum of bureaucracy allows for more flexibility in decision making. Low pupil-teacher ratios allow for more individualised instruction and more attention iven to students. Relationships between students, teachers, administrators and school board members tend to be closer. Parental and community involvement tends to be stronger than in larger schools”.

Barker and Gump proposed the “inside-outside perceptual paradox” which stated that even though larger schools were more impressive on the outside, upon closer scrutiny the small school provided a better quality of education.

They report that small schools encourage inter-action; they serve the community and invite strong support from the home and the community. As a community we must be strong and protect the resources and services we currently enjoy.

I say, beware the super sizing argument!

Dear Parents & Caregivers

The Life Cycle of a School Teacher
When I went to training college, the international hero of good teaching was Jean Piaget. Piaget was a Swiss developmental psychologist and a philosopher. He believed strongly in the power of education. He declared “only education is capable of saving our societies from possible collapse, whether violent or gradual”.

Piaget believed that the way children learn was by “an upward expanding spiral in which children must constantly reconstruct the ideas forming at earlier levels with new, higher order concepts acquired at the next level”.

I have not heard Piaget’s name much in the last three decades. Other names and philosophies have come and gone.

Well, guess what? Just last week I attended a seminar in Gore (of all places!) where the theme was co-constructing the curriculum!

Co-construction in this context refers to the child and the teacher working together to develop the learning pathway. Piaget’s theories are alive well!

Here at NEV Normal teaching is inquiry based. This allows for considerable opportunities for children to be part of the construction of the curriculum. Inquiry is basically finding answers to questions. Lehmann says “Inquiry means living in the soup. Inquiry means living in the uncomfortable space where we don’t know the answer”.

Swimming
When I first came to NEV Normal, the teachers took the swimming lessons. This made for stressed out teachers - they had to get the children to the pool, help them get into their togs, take the lesson, help them get dry and clothed and return them to school and carry on with the days programme.

Thanks to the PTA and the school donation we now contract Jill Clarke Swim School to provide swimming tuition. What a change for our staff and what a better service for the children.

We do appreciate the efforts of the PTA and those who support them and those who pay the school activity donation.

Art Installation
One of our parents, Moira Crossman, has been working on a seating space in front of the school hall. Moira works mainly with Oamaru stone and in this instance adds local macrocarpa and clay tiles made by some of our children to create a space for ‘Korero”, where people can sit and talk; a space where groups can be welcomed.

Moira’s work complements the two carved pou which are in that same area. He mihi nui tenei ki a koe Moira mo to mahi ataahua!

Newsletter 8 May 2013

8 May 2013         Term 2 Week 1                    13/12

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Welcome to Term 2
The new term is well underway. Swimming lessons have begun and will continue until next Thursday.

The school boiler is cranked up and the classrooms are warm and cosy. We have an abundance of bird life around the school and so enjoy constant bird song. Thanks to Mrs Hesson, R3 are adding to the sweet sounds of nature with their valiant attempts at mastering that melodic instrument, the recorder!

Mrs Will is off on a sabbatical for the term and we welcome back Mrs Robyn Cleland. Mrs Cleland will take the new entrant class for the term and we will operate two new entrant classes when Mrs Will returns.

Mrs Kewene-Edwards had a major operation in the holidays and will return to work next week. Mrs Kieser is teaching in R5 in her absence.

The Board of Trustees have decided to increase all teacher-aide and cleaners’ wages to what has been termed the ‘living wage’. This is $18.40 per hour. The Trustees really value the work that our teacher aides and cleaners do and want to acknowledge this by paying them accordingly. For more information on the living wage idea visit livingwagenz.org.nz

Board elections are nearly upon us. Please consider stepping up to do your bit for the school and the community.

Kia Kaha tatou Katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie

Child’s Bike
A child’s bike with trainer wheels and a helmet were left in the school grounds over the holidays. Mr Harvey kindly locked them away. If you know the owner please enquire a the office.

SunSmart Schools
Even though the sunny days continue, it’s now the time of year to put the sun hats and sunscreen away. Thanks for being SunSmart last term, it has been a summer to remember!

During Terms 2 and 3 the ultraviolet radiation levels are much lower, reducing the risk of skin or eye damage. In fact it is important to get some winter sun onto your skin. Sunlight on the skin produces vitamin D, which is necessary for strong bones and general good health. So get outside and enjoy the winter sun.

Taking a trip to the snow? At altitude, ultraviolet radiation levels are higher. Remember hats, SPF 30+ sunscreen and sunglasses when on the slopes.

Learning Power Tip of the Week
“Parents read to your children often;
they enjoy stories and so will you.”

Netball
Netball commences this term. Many thanks to Mrs Hesson and Sacha Turnbull for organising and coaching the teams. Please ensure your child’s netball fees are paid as soon as possible.

We seem to be missing some netball skirts. If you have one at home please return to school as soon as possible.

Flippaball Results
Congratulations to the Tuna team who gained 3rd place in their competition at the end of last term.

Mrs Hesson would like to thank the Flippaballers and parents for the generous gift presented to her at assembly. It was very much appreciated. Mrs Hesson would also like to thank parents who assisted with the games and for getting children to practices and to Moana Pool.
