30 June 2009 Term 2 Week 10 09/20

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Tena koutou te Whanau

Condolences
The school offers sympathies to Mrs. Evans-Weir whose father died on Friday evening. Mrs. Evans-Weir is the longest serving teacher at our school – 25 years! Most of the classroom teachers will be attending Mr. Evan’s funeral tomorrow, Wednesday, which is to be held at Hope and Sons at 1.00pm. The College teachers will take classes under my supervision in the absence of the teachers. If parents wish to, they can take children home at lunchtime to ease the pressure on the remaining staff. Please let the office know before taking your child home.

End of Term
Time flies when you’re having fun! It seems like it was only last week that we started this term and now it’s nearly over. It is a good time to stop and consider the progress your child has made and if you have any concerns to make an appointment to talk with his or her teacher. Teachers have been assessing children’s reading these last couple of weeks so they will have up-to-date data to share with you.

Promotion
A large number of children are moving class at the start of next term. Parents will have received confirmation of who is moving this past Monday. Children involved will have a trial run this week! Most children find this an exciting event. Some get anxious. Please let us know next term if your child is finding the going tough in their new class.

Finally, we wish all the school families a safe and
enjoyable break.

Asthma and Winter
One in four Kiwi kids have asthma, and it’s the most common cause of hospitalisations during winter. Asthma symptoms often get worse when people have a cold or the flu, air temperatures get lower, and houses become damp.
The most common symptoms of asthma are coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and a “tight chest”.

If your child has asthma, there are some important things you can do:
Make sure they take their preventer inhalers as prescribed (usually brown, orange or dark red)
Keep the bedrooms as warm and dry as possible
Avoid free-standing gas heaters (they produce a lot of moisture).

If your child uses their reliever inhaler (usually blue) more than twice a week, their asthma may be poorly controlled. Please see your doctor.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Stars on Stage

The senior children and their teachers as well as
Jacqueline O’Brien, Cheryl Cartmell, Lynne Buijck and teacher assistant Victoria Cooper have been working flat out lately as they prepare for the
biennial Stars on Stage performance. The theme this year is fire and particularly the Australian bush fires. The mixture of dance, drama, music and costumes make for a memorable performance. Congratulations to the teachers and adults - the dress rehearsal last Friday was well received by the large local crowd.

For many children this will be their only opportunity to perform in a proper theatre in front of a large
audience so for that reason alone it is a special event and well worth the extra effort put in by staff,
children and parents. Stars on Stage also gives the children a taste of performing in a major production – all are expected to participate regardless of
training or skill – so the children are thus challenged to do something new and perhaps unfamiliar to them!

Many parents are disappointed that they have missed out on buying tickets for the show. We have made our protests to the organizers about this but there is not much more we can do. We believe the ticket sales process will be reviewed following the problems faced by parents this year.

Finally, good luck to the children for the upcoming performance.

Security after hours

DNI had a break in last week and they lost some computer gear and other expensive items. The same weekend, a young man was caught by the police
trying to break in to our school. As a result we have stepped up our afterhours security patrols. However, I ask all parents and neighbours to be vigilant in keeping an eye on the school in the evenings and over the weekends.

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora tatou katoa – The Recession
When I lived in Wellington I used to dine from time to time at The Green Parrot Restaurant. Their portions are legendary and each meal comes with piles of fresh white bread and real butter! Established in 1923, this diner is well known as a favourite haunt of politicians. More importantly The Green Parrot has a loyal following because during the Great Depression the owners fed from their back door the poor and hungry with leftover food. That was over 70 years ago but the loyalty to this Wellington establishment is still strong.

Today I read “A Generous Difference”, a paper by Vivian Hutchinson, the beginning of which I have taken the liberty of recording here:
“The Great Depression of the 1930s was one of the most fertile periods in Western history for social innovation ... and our current economic crisis will no doubt demand just as much creativity and innovation from all of us. This paper looks at what social innovation is, and discusses the key role that philanthropy can play in fostering fresh thinking and action on our country’s social challenges.

In this paper, Vivian Hutchinson discusses some key strategies for philanthropy at this time:
“Let’s meet this recession with our generosity ... which means being generous in our thought as well as our resources.”
Vivian Hutchinson’s speech was part of a workshop on Philanthropy and Social Innovation — New Approaches in a Changing World - given at the Philanthropy New Zealand conference, March 2009. The full text can be read online, and downloaded from:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/13839690.

The successive Green Parrot owners certainly have benefitted from the generosity of the founders over the intervening years and their story is a pertinent one for us as we currently face tough times. What an interesting take on the challenge of the economic downturn – turn it into a positive by being generous in thought and action!
