Recent Local Research on ADHD
(Acknowledgement: Dr Dione Healey, University of Otago Department of Psychology)
Mrs Staynes and I attended a seminar on Friday updating clinicians and others about recent research on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. What we learnt can be applied to all children.

University of Otago researchers have found that playing simple memory and movement games over a sustained period, say once a day for a month, can reduce the severity of ADHD.

ADHD is typified by the inability of a child (or adult) to self-regulate. The criteria for ADHD can be:
A: six or more symptoms within a domain, for at least 6 months:
Hyperactivity
squirms and fidgets
can’t stay seated
runs/climbs excessively
can’t play/work quietly
always on the go
talks excessively
blurts out answers
can’t wait turn
intrudes/interrupts others

Inattention
careless
difficulty sustaining attention
doesn’t listen when spoken to
no follow through
can’t organise
avoids tasks requiring sustained effort
loses important items
easily distracted
forgetful in daily activities

B: onset before 7 years of age.

C: some impairment from symptons in 2 or more
settings

D: clear evidence of clinical impairment in social,
or emotional functioning

E: symptoms do not occur exclusively during the course of PDD, Schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder; and are not better accounted for by an other mental disorder.

Currently a child who is diagnosed ADHD is treated either by medication, which has some unwelcome side effects, or by behaviour management, which is costly. The problem with these 2 interventions is that if the course of medication or therapy is stopped, the child reverts to ADHD behaviour.

University of Otago researchers have found that ‘game playing’ therapy benefits the child well after the course.

Mrs Staynes and I were impressed with the results even though the research is in its early stage. We can see that all children, not just those with an ADHD diagnosis, can learn a lot from the games used in the research. They teach not only self regulation but other valuable skills.

Here are some of the games used in the research:

Executive Skills
Copy Me (attention and working memory)
Green-Orange-Red (inhibitory control)
“We went to the Park” (working memory)
Musical Statues (inhibitory control)
Simons Says (inhibitory control)
Snap (attention)
Motor Skills
Ball games
Puzzles
Leap frog
Threading
Ball and spoon
Try some of these games at home and see if your child’s behaviour improves!

On behalf of the staff I wish our school families a restful and safe school holidays.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

PB4L
The school is in the 3rd year of piloting the Ministry of Education sponsored Positive Behaviour for Learning programme.

This programme is based on a successful American model for behaviour improvement. Essentially it aims to standardise expectations across the school, simplify rules and outline clear consequences for negative behaviour.

Throughout the process we have developed our behaviour expectations:

Safety, Respect, Responsibility

Last term we decided to apply the same template to academic expectations and have come up with a simplified mantra for learning:

Ready, Thinking, Winning

We will be doing some work with the children over the next months around these themes: we want them to be ready to learn, to engage their brains fully and want to be successful. I attach the academic expectations so you may reinforce them at home.

Cellphones
A few weeks ago we reluctantly banned bringing toys and games and such like from home because of the conflict they were causing.

The teachers have asked me to remind parents that if children bring mobile phones to school, these must be handed in to the office at the start of school and collected after 3pm. The same goes for mp3 players and other valuable items.

Class Size Turnaround
Thanks to overwhelming parent and teacher protest the Government has reversed the class size issue. This is great news for us as a school. It also shows the power parents have to overturn government policy.

There have been a number of changes in education policy in recent years and there will be more to come.

What is the problem that needs constant fixing? I include in this newsletter a press release from the NZ Teachers’ Council boss, Peter Lind, as an answer to this question.

NEV Community Project
Please find attached a membership form for the NEV Community Project. Did you know the Project has recently attracted considerable Government funding?

MEDIA RELEASE: Dr Peter Lind

Director of the NZ Teachers Council

"New Zealand parents should be assured that our education system is high performing", according to Dr Peter Lind, the Director of the Teachers Council.

The latest OECD Report (2012): OECD Reviews of Evaluation and Assessment in Education: New Zealand has confirmed this view.

Emeritus Professor Warwick Elley was reported recently as saying, "the reason it should provide us assurance is because the authors of this report are top experts from other OECD countries... Using a set of rich data, they are able to provide an independent, comparative perspective and are ideally placed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the New Zealand education system".

This view is confirmed by our rankings on The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). It is a worldwide study by the OECD of 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading. New Zealand consistently scores in the top half dozen OECD countries, even though, according to the evidence gathered by the OECD, we spend far less per student than nearly all of the other 34 OECD nations.

The great majority of our students are repeatedly up with the best in the world. In the latest survey, New Zealand students were ranked fourth in reading literacy, fourth in scientific literacy and seventh in mathematical literacy.

"It is not easy to maintain these rankings and New Zealand has consistently maintained its overall ranking on these measures since they were first introduced in 2000," said Dr Lind.

Three examples illustrate the significance of New Zealand's achievement. Australia has recorded a significant decline since 2000 on all the skills measured. England has slipped from seventh in 2000 to 25th in reading, eighth to 28th in maths and fourth to 16th in science. The United States only rates around the average of all OECD countries.

"This reflects very favourably on the quality of New Zealand teachers."

However, it is true that the latest PISA survey still shows a wide dispersion of scores among New Zealand students.

"Lifting the performance of those New Zealand students that are underachieving must be a priority for our education system, but without allowing the slippage in our overall rankings as has recently occurred in Australia.

"To achieve this requires a strong commitment from the teaching profession and the Government in partnership. There are no silver bullets and a focus on a single variable will not achieve the goal intended. It will require dialogue and detailed consideration of any initiatives proposed," said Dr Lind.

Toys and Collectable Cards at School
School policy is that children should not bring toys, cards or valuable items to school unless at the express invitation of the classroom teacher.

We have been fairly relaxed about this rule in recent times. Unfortunately this has led to conflict so hence -forth we will enforce this rule.

From tomorrow, Wednesday 6 June, toys, collectable cards and other such items brought to school will be confiscated and handed to parents at the earliest opportunity.

iPad Trial
The school has 36 netbooks, 14 laptops and 12 desktops. We are trialling iPads in some classes and with some groups. We currently have 4 iPads and hope to purchase more when we have the funds to do so.

A Sense of Belonging
Children need to know that they are important. When they feel accepted and loved by important people in their lives they feel comfortable, safe and secure, and open to communication. If children feel respected and secure within a family, they will find it easier to make friendships outside the family. To help children develop that sense of belonging, you can:

Help them build valuable family, friends and relationships outside of their family.

Encourage pride in their family’s ethnic background and heritage.

Keep reminders of family events and family history around the home (photograph albums, home videos, etc).

Provide a special time for each child or young person. Encourage children to talk about their day.
