A Note about Recent Parent/Teacher Interviews
Parents often comment that the parent/teacher  interviews are too short and that sometimes they have to wait when other interviews go over time.

I need to clarify that these interviews need not be the end of matters brought up during the interview: if you need more time, please organise to meet with the classroom teacher for a longer and more comprehensive catch-up. While this facility is available throughout the year, it is particularly useful after the interviews.

Teachers are expected to be in their rooms from 8.30am onwards and ‘til 3.30pm to answer the day to day ‘housekeeping’ type queries from parents. More serious issues, academic matters or pastoral concerns should not be raised at this time—there is no chance of privacy in that setting. Also, at the end of a teaching day, the teacher is usually still in teaching mode and needs some time to ‘come-down’ from the day. Best to signal to the teacher that you would like to catch up about a matter at a better time.

Most teachers are happy to be contacted via email. This is a good way to begin a discussion about your child’s schooling.

And finally, if you have expressed a concern to the classroom teacher and you feel nothing has been done, make an appointment to see me or Mrs Staynes.

Disco
Thanks to the students and parents who organised the disco that was held on Friday. What a fun night it was. The children were very well behaved and happy. It is certainly heartening to see a generation of good dancers coming through!!!

Stranger Danger

BOT News
Dear Parents/Caregivers

We, the Board of Trustees (BOT), just wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves. Your current BOT has the following parent representatives: AJ Woodhouse (chair), Jesseme Johnston-Jones, Lynn Bosworth, Trevor Schaffer and Matt Thompson. We are here to do as the title suggests, represent the school
community on the school governance board. A teacher representative, Karen Sintmaartensdijk and the
principal John McKenzie, also serve on the BOT. The BOT has a number of roles and functions and we meet on a regular basis (approximately monthly).

One of the tasks undertaken is the review of school policies and procedures and the drafting of the annual School Charter and budget forecasting. As members of our school community, should you wish to have the Board undertake a review of any policy or procedure, you just need to speak to Sara Lindsay in the School Office and your requests can be reviewed/placed on the BOT agenda if necessary. A set of the school policies is available to view in the School Office.

We will provide information on items that may be of interest to you from time to time in the newsletter.

Included with this newsletter is a survey seeking your opinion on the after school programme.

Kind regards
Board of Trustees

Keeping Safe in the Valley and at School
From time to time our community constable informs us of suspicious activity in the Valley. We had one such report last week - a member of the public noticed an odd looking male taking photos of children in their street. The community constable used this report to urge schools to: -
  • remind children about safety in and around school and in the community generally;
  • remind parents to talk to their children about keeping themselves and their friends safe when they are playing on the street or heading to and from school.
Our community constable, Lou France, recommends calling her immediately if you see anything
suspicious on 473 0737, or Dunedin Central on 471 4800 or dial 111 if you fear for someone's safety.

I will ask teachers to revisit the issues of personal safety with their classes and also be particularly
vigilant while on duty during breaks.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

The Great “Get Ready for School” Challenge
At assembly on Friday I asked the children to help parents in their efforts to get them to school on time and ready to learn.
I challenged the children to co-operate with parents, in particular to: -

  • go to bed when asked;
  • get up when roused;
  •  get dressed, complete ablutions and be ready for breakfast;
  •  eat breakfast without complaint and dilly– dallying;
  •  organise the school bag, coat, lunch and be out the door in good time.
 Now readers may think I am in cloud cuckoo land to expect children to complete this list in double quick time while they sing happily! But that doesn’t mean we cannot try!

I offered the children a bribe. Parents who want to instil more routine to the morning can let me know if their child co-operates to improve the morning regime and I will find a prize of some sort. The routine must be kept reasonably regularly for a week or more to qualify!

Good luck!

6 August 2013    Term 3 Week 2   13/23

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Absences and Lateness
I am always banging on about lateness and absences. The reason is obvious: classrooms run to daily routines and weekly plans. If a child misses a day or a part of a day that child will have the disadvantage of missing some of the sequence of that learning.

Ironically the children who are perennially late and absent are those who most require the routines and sequences of the learning process. These children are often behind and their absence or lateness exacerbate the problem. They fall further behind.

I do not know of any parent who doesn’t want their child to achieve well at school and in life. Therefore I urge parents to get your children to school on time and every day.

And if you have trouble getting your child to school for any reason we will help you. Just come and talk to us.

For your information the Ministry of Education require us to report any child absent for more that 15 ½ days per term or who is constantly late to the local truancy service. We do comply with this requirement.

Kia Kaha tatou Katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

Information on Fonterra Milk in Schools
You will have no doubt seen the media coverage this weekend concerning a limited amount of a particular type of whey protein concentrate (WPC80) produced by Fonterra.

I am writing to reassure you that all Fonterra Milk for Schools (and KickStart Breakfast) products are not affected and are completely safe.

The affected whey protein concentrate is an isolated issue and does not impact any products going into New Zealand schools. Dairy products such as fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese, spreads and UHT milk products are also not affected.

This has no impact on the ongoing operation of Fonterra Milk for Schools. However, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to get in touch at milkforschools@fonterra.com or by calling us on 0800 900 070.
