Public Health Nurse Information

Managing your Child’s Child Symptoms
Research tells us that bed-rest and warm fluids is better treatment for colds than taking antibiotics and buying expensive cold products. That means keeping children at home when they are unwell and giving warm drinks like Milo/hot chocolate. Hot drinks will help with sore throats. Giving lots of fluids helps with fever.

Some effects of a cold, for example sore throat, may be helped by products from the chemist. However, throat lozenges that do not have local anaesthetic in them are the same as giving them sweet lollies and do not help sore throats. Discuss with the chemist the sugar content of some medications as these can affect your child’s teeth.

Remember to keep your child home if he/she is unwell.

The Public Health Nurse for our school is:
Catherine Moir, Phone 4769748.

Goal Setting
With this newsletter you will find a notice about upcoming goal setting times. The goal setting process is a chance for parents to get a handle on the learning strengths and weaknesses of their child.

Goal setting is only one part of our assessment schedule. I have attached our assessment & delivery plan which shows what and when assessments are held. When you come to the meeting you can ask how your child performed in these assessments.

The senior staff analyse results from all the assessments taken during the year and use this information to determine staffing and budgetary advice to the Board of Trustees.

The senior staff and teachers also use the assessment results to see whether the teacher is getting it right.

None of this information is secret! We encourage parents to ask about their child’s progress at every opportunity.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

Public Health Nurse Information

Vaccinations
The Ministry of Health recommends Influenza Immunisation for children, pregnant women and anyone over the age of 65. Influenza infection rates are generally highest in children and they are the major cause of the spread of influenza viruses in the community. In 2009 the highest hospitalisation rates occurred in children aged less than 1 followed by children aged 1-4 years. The vaccination can be used to immunise children six months and older and is especially recommended and funded if they have an ongoing medical condition such as: regularly use an asthma preventer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems or other serious medical conditions. For more information contact the local Immunisation Coordinators or IMAC website – www.immune.org.nz

18 July 2012 Term 3 Week 1 12/20

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa
Welcome back to term 3. Only 5 months till Christmas!!

I have included with this newsletter a press release regarding influenza and urge you to read it carefully. Flu is about and schools in Invercargill and Christchurch report high numbers of children absent as a result.

We promote hygienic behaviour at school - all toilets have soap, hot water and towels and each area of the school has electronic hand sanitisers; teachers also provide tissues in the classroom.

We recommend all children see a doctor if flu is suspected. Any families who have difficulty getting to a doctor should let me or Mrs Staynes know as we can help both with transport and fees.

Keep warm and well.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.
