Return of School Books and Sports Tops

A fridge magnet with 2012 term dates has been included with your child’s report.

Contact Over the Holidays
If, over the holidays in the case of an emergency, you need to contact a school staff member, please email office@nevn.school.nz or leave a message on the school answer phone.

On behalf of the staff best wishes to all school families for a family, fun-filled Christmas, safe travels for those on the move and a prosperous and healthy 2012.

ON WITH YOUR HATS AND OFF TO THE PARTY!
All families are invited to the North East Valley Christmas celebration, which this year is a Mad Hatter's Tea Party! You may be aware that tea parties have been held all over NEV to encourage conversation with the older members of our communities - these have been very successful and so the idea of a BIG tea party for all ages to celebrate together was born. There will be prizes for fabulous hats, Christmas carols to sing along with from Sounds Nor’Easterly, children can make decorations and everyone will have the opportunity to hang their wishes for the Valley on the Christmas Tree. So on with your hats and off to the party being held on Friday 16th Dec 3.30 - 6pm under the big tree outside the tech block at DNI (in hall if wet).

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Yet More End of Year Updates
1. The New Look School Dental Service.
The school’s dental clinic has been closed by the District Health Board. This closure is part of the restructure of the school dental service.

Our school has been vocal in its opposition to the restructure but to no avail - 90 years of on-site clinics and dental nurses is over.

So most schools in Dunedin have only one option - parents will have to organise to get children to one of the new dental hubs. Our nearest will be at the University.

Our school has been offered an alternative - the children can be enrolled to attend the Dental School training clinic. Those who elect this option will have their children collected from school and driven to the Dental School, then later returned. A trainee dental therapist will accompany the children to and from school.

The above option will be helpful to parents who are unavailable during the day so I am pleased we have had this offer.

Parents can of course opt to organise to take their children to the dental hub or their own dentist.

2. Bi-lingual Class
The bi-lingual class has operated successfully throughout 2011. There have been around 18 students from Year 3 upwards attending.

One whanau group proposed to the Board of Trustees a whole day bi-lingual programme for 2012. This proposal was accepted at the recent Board of Trustees meeting so for 2012 Te Ao Marama Tawhara will teach a whole day bi-lingual programme. The likely day will be Wednesday.

Parents are urged to register interest in this class before the end of the year.

It is worthy to note that the class was over-subscribed this year and so don’t leave registration too late!

Apologies
I believe some R10 parents attended assembly on Friday because we had advertised R10 would be presenting an item. R10 did not present because of a swap with R11 earlier in the term. This arrangement was not conveyed to Sara in the office hence the wrong message in the newsletter. We are really sorry about this and we will endeavour to ensure this doesn’t happen again!

Some More Updates
After School Care:
I have heard on the grapevine that Valley Oscar is closing. The Board has been negotiating with a local provider to set up an after school care programme on our site. More on this as it comes to hand, but rest assured we will have a service in place by the start of the new school year.

Classes for 2012:
From time to time we rearrange the roles and responsibilities at school to reflect the changing nature of our school roll. Class lists are being prepared now for next year and these will be published before the end of the term.

National Standards and Our School Charter:
The Board of Trustees submitted its Charter to the Ministry of Education mid way through this year. The Charter has been updated by the Board and the school staff to align with the new national curriculum.

The targets included in the Charter do not change much from year to year: we have high expectations of our children’s progress and on the whole pupils reach the targets. Some of our targets exceed the Government’s National Standards.

The Charter presented to the local Ministry office was rejected by them as it did not have targets aligned to National Standards. They have forced us to include targets they have written for us!

Needless to say, we will continue to set high targets for our children and work hard to achieve these targets. In the meantime, our Charter has been accepted by the Ministry.

Congratulations to the college teachers whose posting finishes this week.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Bring and Buy
Children will be asked today to bring a few unwanted but tidy toys and books for a bring and buy to be held on Friday. We are fundraising for children born with heart defects - we have a few children in our school who fit into this category.

Toys can be given to the classroom teachers. The bring and buy will be held on Friday lunchtime.

No Hat No Play
The school has a well established policy about wearing hats during the 1st and 4th terms. Hats must be brimmed ‘bucket’ style hats or the legionnaires type cap with a flap at the back. Caps, beanies and visors are not acceptable.

Advice on Xbox Type Games
Recently the senior teachers had reason to speak with some senior boys who had been using unusually sophisticated and inappropriate language to describe games they play.

In the meeting it transpired that some children are learning these terms through playing Xbox games like HALO.

These games have at least a PG censors rating - some are R16 and R18. Given our children are all under 12 years old it seems a questionable practice to allow children unsupervised access to such material.

Newsletter 27 September 2011

27 September 2011 Term 3 Week 9 11/20

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Rugby Friday
This coming weekend is a big weekend for sports lovers: the last World Cup game to be held in Dunedin; the ABs play Canada; and of course the mighty Warriors get an opportunity to take out the NRL Championship.

Therefore we have made this Friday a Rugby Mad day. Children can dress in sports colours or uniforms of their choice. We’ll decorate the school with a few flags and buntings. At lunch time we’ll have an Ireland vs Italy touch game.

Homework
The Board of Trustees are reviewing our homework policy this term. They would like to hear parents’ views on this matter. Leave a note at the office, email the Board at office@nevn.school.nz or give your views to a teacher who will reports your views to the Board.

Dental Clinic Closure
Our school dental clinic is now closed and will no longer be used as a dental clinic. The local DHB has ‘restructured’ the school dental service. We have fought the DHB on this issue but sadly have lost! So henceforth our children will have their dental care needs met at the Otago School of Dentistry. Please read the attached information sheet which explains the new system. I acknowledge all of the wonderful dental nurses and therapists who have served in our wee school clinic. This system lasted 90 years and has now come to an end.

Kia Kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

Public Health Nurse Snippets
As our dental therapist Joan is at our school at present we have included these tips from the Public Health Nurse.

Tips for a Healthy Smile
Start brushing the baby teeth as soon as them come through the gums
Brush twice a day with a smear of fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush
Choose healthy tooth friendly snacks
Avoid giving soft drinks and sugary, sticky snacks
Lift the lip every month to check for signs of tooth decay

Enrol your child at a dental clinic and have regular dental check-ups

Lift the Lip to Check for Tooth Decay
Early identification helps prevent or stop the progression of tooth decay.
Twice daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste will help keep your child’s teeth healthy.
Chalky white spots or lines near the gums are signs of early decay. Seek dental care for advice and treatment to help stop these chalky areas turning into cavities.
Brown marks and cavities mean your child needs dental care now- to prevent toothache and infections.
Broken teeth and abscesses mean your child will have toothache. They need dental care now to prevent more pain and the infection spreading.

JILL CLARKE’S TIPS TO HELP SWIMMERS THROUGH THE WEEK
 If you are cold in the pool wear a cap. This assists in reducing heat loss and protects other swimmers and instructors from any health issues e.g. head lice;
 Wearing a woollen hat to and from the pool will also keep you warm;
 Goggles protect eyes from chlorine and allow the swimmer to see underwater;
 Limited numbers of goggles are available if you have forgotten your own, do not forget to return goggles you have borrowed;
 If the class requires flippers select your correct size prior to the lesson. Flippers can be found in the equipment cage at the far end of the pool;
 Bring your own flippers if you have them; they often fit better;
 As swimming is kinaesthetic boys progress faster in short leg swimmers;
 Wetsuits are fine;
 We love children BUT for best results please keep non-swimmers quiet so that the swimmers in the water can hear. This includes mums and dads;
 Children who have had diarrhoea in the week prior to the lesson should not go in the water.

31 August 2011 Term 3 Week 5 11/18

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

School Security
On Monday at about 6pm some young chaps, teenagers we think, climbed up onto the roof of the Junior Block. Who knows what their intention was! Anyway they scarpered before the police arrived and sadly for them, they left behind their cellphones and smokes and a backpack. These items are waiting at the police station to be claimed!

Our school has enjoyed a long period of respite from vandalism and theft. One reason for this is that locals, especially parents, keep a close eye on the place. We need this to continue!

Therefore, please make a point of keeping an eye out for mischief makers if you pass by or through the school out of school hours.

If you notice anything untoward, please call either the Police or First Security on 474 1248.

Congratulations
The senior classes performed with style and grace at the biennial Stars on Stage event. Thanks to the teachers for all the after hours sewing and special thanks to Jacqueline O’Brien who helped with one of the items. DVDs of all the performances can be ordered from the office. The cost is $20.

Assemblies
Holding the weekly assembly in the library is proving to be a challenge. We have decided to hold assembly fortnightly until the hall is available again. We will also trial a few different assembly venues and times: this Friday we will hold assembly at 12 midday and if it is fine it will be outdoors.

Kia Kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie
Principal

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Snow Day
I sympathise with parents whose plans had to be amended yesterday after conflicting messages were broadcast about school closures. At 6.30pm Radio Dunedin reported primary schools would open at 10am. Later that was changed and the radio station report stated schools were closed for the day. For many families that change would have meant reorganising the whole day to accommodate child care for the day.

Late starts and closures for Dunedin primary and intermediate account, current and forecast conditions; whether children can get to school safely; whether staff can get to school safely. They take advice from a number of sources in the city.

Monday was a no-brainer. Tuesday was different and the call to close schools was not as easily defended.

I have polled our school staff and only 2 classroom teachers would have been able to safely get to school by 10am yesterday. So in hindsight it was the correct call for our school.

Parent Workshop
On Monday 29 August a parent workshop will be held in the school staffroom to outline our school’s safe travel plan. This plan has been developed by the DCC, Sport Otago and the Police in consultation with families to provide a safe and healthy way for children to get to and from school. All are welcome to attend.

Snow/Wintry Conditions
The main reason for school closure or late starts is the condition of the roads and the safety issue of travelling on them. While many children could walk to school it is not often the case for teachers if they do not live near by. The decision for school closure is made by a group of school principals who live in the hill suburbs. A 10am start will be made in consultation with the local police or taxis.

On especially wintery mornings check the radio
stations/cancellation line for any school closure or delayed start notices. Alternatively ring school as a message will be left on the answer phone if there is a delayed start.

If you do choose to keep your child at home please ring and leave a message on the school answer phone. Local radio stations most commonly used for cancellations are Newstalk ZB 1044AM, 4XO 1206AM, Radio Dunedin 1305AM, Classic Hits 89FM. The cancellation line number is 474 8426. 2 August 2011 Term 23 Week 1 11/16

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Welcome back to the third term; a special welcome to new and returning children and their families.

Our family spent some of our holiday in Auckland. My wife was on business there. I was able to spend some time with my eldest daughter and her two wee ones. Auckland is so crowded these days and the motorway is madly fast with cars and trucks hurtling along at crazy speed; the main streets and roads are a nightmare of congestion.

We went to the war memorial museum with the children—it was like the motorway: too busy, too noisy and too fast.

Returning to Dunedin was a relief—slower traffic, less frenetic pedestrians, quieter shops. I know where I’d rather be!

Kia Kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

Charter Development
The Trustees have been working on re-writing the school charter for the last wee while. This work is now complete and the charter was presented to the Ministry of Education local manager last week. Copies of the charter are available at the school.

Education Review Office Visit
ERO have sent us a copy of the ‘unconfirmed report’ following their recent review. The Board have an opportunity to correct any errors of fact contained therein before the report is finalised. Some excerpts follow: -
“A key feature of this school is its immersion in the local community.”
“The school is seen as belonging to and working with the local community.”
“Students benefit from the strong links that the school has with the local College of Education and Ministry of Education.”
“Having a second “teacher” in the room makes it easier for students to learn in smaller groups and receive individual attention.”
“The school has a warm and supportive culture”.
"The school’s 2010 achievement data shows that the majority of students are achieving at or above National Standards expectations in numeracy and the school’s expectations for reading and writing. Those students who are not achieving as well as expected are closely monitored and receive extra support through specific programmes.”

Welcome to Jonathan Rhodes Kindergarten
The Jonathan Rhodes children are relocating to our school hall in the next week or so as their kindergarten is to be rebuilt. They will occupy the hall till the end of the year. We are very happy to accommodate our colleagues and the children from Jonathan Rhodes - the school has had a close and special relationship with the kindy for many years.

School Car Park
We will suggest to the parents of the kindergarten that they drop off and collect their children from our car park in front of the community buildings. Therefore we are hoping our school parents will avoid using the school car park during kindy drop-off and pick up times.

Chicken Pox
This highly contagious disease is making its mark across Dunedin. NEV Normal is no exception. If your child contacts chicken pox it is recommended you keep your child away from school until 5 days from the day the spots first appear.
