24 June 2013                       Term 2 Week 8                       13/19

Current School Wide Theme
The other day I went into R3 for some reason and got a real fright. The children were re-arranging the furniture. It appeared chaotic - it was noisy and messy and no-one seemed to be in charge.

To an outsider this would have looked like a shambles! But to a teacher, this would have been exactly what she had planned. Chaos and order = learning!

The children were setting up space-ships for their planned departure to outer space.

The students across the school have been working on a Science theme this term - Planet Earth and Beyond.

I thought of this topic this morning - the moon was a spectacular sight as it hung bright over the city. I thought of this topic also on Saturday when I attended the NEV Matariki celebrations at DNI.

I have attached a sheet explaining where Matariki (or Pleiades) can be spotted. While the nights are long take the children outside on a clear night and see if you can identify them.

R10 Writing About the Planets
Jupiter is cold and rocky no one has been there so they send robots to take pictures of it. I wish I can go to space because I can see all of the different planets. Saturn has rings around it. The moon has craters and it is bumpy. You can not breathe in space. By Chiara.

Stars are fire. Stars are made by the sun because the sparks come out. Some people think the moon is cheese. Some people don’t believe in Pluto. The sun is very hot. Some people go on the moon. By Jackson.

Creative Writing
In My Mother’s Handbag

In my Mother’s handbag there are;
Her trusty pen, though out of ink, she can not bear to throw out.
An old, tattered, almost finished book.
The spare glasses with the broken lense.
And the juicy fruitbursts, waiting to be eaten.

In the secret back pocket of my Mother’s handbag there are;
The stress she brings home from work and stuffs in her socks so it won’t escape.
The twinkle she puts in her eye when she’s happy.
And that little box of secrets I can never get my hands on.

Newsletter 18 June 2013

18 June 2013                       Term 2 Week 7                         13/18

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Bullying
I wrote recently in the newsletter about our school response to negative behaviour. Parents are most concerned about bullying. So today I would like to define what bullying is in a school context and what we do about it.

Bullying in school is when a child or a group of children target another child or group on a regular basis. At primary school bullies mainly use put-downs and threats as opposed to force. This is because it is harder to get away with hitting than it is to get away with subtler forms of bullying.

Bullies are not created in a vacuum - they are created in environments where bullying already exists. Children who are bullied and treated badly at home become bullies at school. Most children who bully usually pick on someone smaller or weaker than them.

We have a number of ways to deal with bullies - first and foremost we show our disapproval to the bully using a whole range of consequences from a ‘telling off’ to the more serious time-out. If the behaviour persists we may stand a child down from school. We also look at the causes and we try to address these.

Secondly we are explicit in teaching children how to stand up for themselves and for each other. Bullies often rely on the bullied to submit. They do not expect strong defence nor do they like it when others rally around the child being bullied.

We need to know if a child is being targeted by a bully. In a school our size it is pretty easy to see who is a bully and who is under threat. We do rely on children and families to let us know if there is bullying going on that we have missed. Be assured we take any bullying concern very seriously and welcome parent’s concerns.

Parents can help further by encouraging their children to stand up for themselves and their mates when they see bullying.

Kia Kaha tatou Katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

Newsletter 12 June 2013

12 June 2013      Term 2 Week 6                13/17

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

During our first ‘new board’ meeting of the year I presented to the new trustees with some new information about pupil behaviour. One of the trustees wanted to know what constituted moderate to serious misbehaviour at our school.

I responded that as we gather more and morebehaviour data and deal with the trends this data shows up, our threshold for moderate to serious poor behaviour lowers. What was moderate two years ago is more serious now as we deal with the most serious stuff and nearly eliminate it.

More thorough data collection informs decisions we make about behaviour and we get a better view of what is really happening in the playground and in the classroom. As a result we have got pretty good systems in the playground for improving behaviour.

Our focus this year is gathering behaviour data about classroom behaviour. No doubt this process will improve children’s behaviour in class.

Mrs Staynes and I have developed a behaviour challenge game for use at home which is available free from Mrs Staynes.

Kia Kaha tatou Katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

6 June 2013                Term 2 Week 5                  13/16

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Congratulations
We offer congratulations to staff members Whaea Marama who gained her Maori studies degree with honours recently and Mrs Leia Silby, gifted and talented teacher who gained her Masters in Education. Well done!

Some Thoughts
Last month the staff held a late afternoon session for parents to present some behaviour ideas for the home. One brave soul attended! Last week we offered the chance for parents to attend a maths session on a Monday morning. Only three parents from education sites across the Valley turned up. I would be keen for people to let us know what is a good time for parents to attend school related workshops so we can better meet the needs of our community.

Finally
Thanks to those who accepted a nomination to be a school trustee. Congratulations to those who have been elected and thanks to those who missed out. I believe the Minister of Education has decided to appoint commissioners to schools which did not get enough interest from the community to fill vacancies on their Boards. We are indeed lucky to have such commitment from our parents.

John McKenzie
Principal
