9 December 2009 Term 4 Week 9 09/38

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Important Notice - Change of Dates
The last day of school this term is now Thursday 17 December.

When school dates were decided upon last year, we had not decided on the use of our 2teacher only days. As a consequence our dates are incorrect.

Therefore, the school finish date for this year should be Wednesday the 16th December. This oversight has only been discovered this week. A number of parents have organised time off work to attend the end of year celebration on Thursday. Therefore we have decided to finish school lunchtime on Thursday the 17th.

The talent quest set down for Friday will now be held from 1.30pm on Wednesday the 16th.

Any parents who are unable to organise care for their children because of these changes can arrange with the school office to send them to school on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Please inform Sara on 473 8246 if you require this service.

My sincere apologies for any disruption this may cause.

NEV Christmas Fiesta
The school will have a BBQ operating at the
Christmas party. All children will receive a ticket on Friday which they can cash in for a free sausage at the party. Others can purchase a sausage for a gold coin donation. Volunteers to ‘man’ the BBQ please contact the school office.

Talent Quest
Now Wednesday 16 December. Open to all students, individuals and groups to perform in the areas of dance, drama, comedy, singing, instrument. Please discuss this with your child/ren and think about areas in which they might perform.

Self Defence Course for Girls
Y3 & Y4 girls participated in a self defence course this week. Their tutor, Ana, taught them about being strong and using strong voices and actions to keep themselves safe.

Reminders
School Donations: There is currently over $1300 in unpaid activity donations. A statement has been sent home with this newsletter if your child’s activity donation has not been paid in full. This money is used to pay the cost of swimming, visits outside the school in support of curriculum learning, visiting performers at the school. It would be appreciated if you could try and contribute something! The school manages its finances very carefully and yet always ends the year on deficit!

Lost Property
As usual there is an overflowing bin of lost property
under the stairs between Rooms 2 & 3. Items will be put out in front of classes for children to check. Any items left at the end of the year will be disposed of.

Farewells and Congratulations
Last week we farewelled Mrs. Navaratne who has worked as an ESOL assistant at our school. Mrs. Navaratne’s family is moving away from Dunedin. In the next couple of weeks we will also farewell Ms. Victoria Cooper and Mrs. Pauline Carnegie both of whom have worked as teacher assistants alongside the teaching staff to support our children. Ms Cooper is going back to University to train as a teacher and Mrs Carnegie’s contract comes to an end. We are grateful to these dedicated and reliable staff members who work hard for us and our children.

We congratulate Ms. Tracy Ballantine on her recent appointment as a permanent teacher at NEV Normal. Tracy has been on a fixed term contract for two years but the Board decided the strengthening school roll meant we could offer the position as a permanent one so the job was advertised and Tracy has been appointed to the job. We offer our congratulations to Tracy and wish her all the best for her time in the Valley!

National Standards Forum
As mentioned in last weeks newsletter, I attended this forum in Wellington. There was universal support among the education leaders present to ask the Minister of Education to immediately postpone the introduction of the National Standards pending a thorough trial of them in a limited number of schools. Here’s hoping the government will reconsider their stance and allow the policy to be tested. As Professor John Hattie said “it could be the most disastrous policy formulated.”

Mrs Navaratne
This week we farewell Mrs Navaratne who is finishing her time as an employee at NEV Normal. Mrs Navaratne has worked with Mrs Probert teaching the children for whom English is a second or new language. In her time here she has endeared herself to the children and staff alike with her quiet and kindly nature and dedication to her work. We will miss her and wish her all the best for the future.

No Hat No Play
All children must wear a hat (this term and Term 1 next year) with a full brim - not cap while outside. Children who do not have a hat must sit in the shade during outside time.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora Koutou Katoa
This Thursday I am off to Wellington to represent the NZ Normal and Model Schools’ Association at a meeting to discuss the recently released National Standards.

As I have pointed out before, we are not concerned about National Standards - we already use data collected locally or nationally to measure how our children are achieving. I include a graph from the local Ministry of Education to illustrate this:

6-year olds NZ NEVN NEVN NEVN NEVN
Reading Levels 2008 2009 2008 2007 20006
Above 22% 77% 75% 68% 67%
Within 15% 8% 5% 11% 13%
Just Below 36% 15% 10% 21% 20%
Well Below 27% 0% 10% 0% 0%

This graph shows that while only 22% of NZ 6 year olds are above the expected reading level for that age, 77% of NEV Normal 6 years olds tested in 2009 are above this expectation!

This is remarkable but not unexpected - we have great teachers working hard to get children to these levels.

So the National Standards aren’t a concern. What is a concern is that schools will divert their attention solely to meeting these standards. This approach could result in a much more narrow education
offered our children.

John McKenzie
Principal Visit the school’s website www.nevn.school.nz

Welcome
A warm welcome to Billie who has started in Room 11. We also welcome her family to our school community.

Portfolios

Smart Food School Lunches
Smart Food lunches are available on Mondays & Thursdays at NEVNS. The cost is $2 or $3 for a larger lunch with two extra sandwiches. Orders & money in a named envelope need to be into the office by 9am.

Road Patrol
Many thanks to Claire Spittle who has helped with road patrol on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Claire is no longer able to assist. If anyone can help supervise the road patrollers at these times please contact Mrs Staynes or the office.

National Standards
To contribute to the debate on national standards, a
parents’ group is being formed to give parents the choice for their children not to participate in standardised tests which have as their purpose categorisation for school reports or for sending to Wellington for storage. The tentative name for the group is: SLOK – Stop Labelling Our Kids. The parent is Dellis Hunt: a Rangiora mother of two school-age children. E-mail address: delnkev@orcon.net.nz

The group has been formed entirely on the initiative of parents and will remain independent of all teacher organisations and political parties.

Sports Report
Flippaball

The senior team played a serious game and won 3 goals to 2. Jack scored 2 of the goals, Mikaire played great attack and Grace got stuck in and did her best, so all three players were joint ‘Players of the Day’.

The junior team have shown improvement but lost their game 4 goals to 1. TJ played an awesome game at defence and was ‘Player of the Day’.

Touch
Following some confusion last week our team played 2 games against boys teams and lost both games. Well done to the players who competed well. Better luck this week!

Cultural Day and other things…
Many thanks to all who contributed to Cultural Day - what a great experience for our children and our families! And the food - from Chinese dumplings to Russian chicken salad; from bucketsful of authentic Tandoori curry to Millie’s boil up! My waistline
certainly had its horizons expanded!! Thanks especially to Mrs Jan Probert who manages to collect an army of supporters on such occasions. Thanks also to Mrs Saroja Navaratne for her work behind the scenes.

We are a diverse group. Such events remind us of the things that make us different and that these differences can actually bring us closer together.

Food especially is a catalyst for conversation and developing relationships. Yesterday I attended a hui in Wellington called by the Families Commission. The topic was Schools Supporting Communities. One school promotes families sitting down to have their evening meal together on one night each week - things have certainly changed in this regard since we were young!

But a simple way to be more of a family - sitting down and talking with each other instead of eating in front of TV, or rushing off to some other activity.

Dickens said something like “wasting time on another is not wasted on oneself”.

20 October 2009 Term 4 Week 2 09/32

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa
Term 4 has taken off like a rocket – we are already into week two. I notice Christmas decorations up already in some of the shops – eek!!!

Swimming lessons have begun under the tutelage of Jill Clark’s Swimming School down at the DNI pool. The school takes the teaching of swimming very seriously so there are two intensive blocks throughout the year. Parents are welcome to attend these lessons to watch how they run and to learn how to best teach your child to swim well.

This coming Monday is a public holiday, Labour Day, and school will be closed. That means a short week and so our teachers lose some more teaching time. This serves to remind us that the time at school is often interrupted by non core activities. This is why it is very important to use the time we do have available as effectively as possible. For parents this means getting children to school every day, on time and ready to learn. The teachers are ready at 9.00 to get straight down to work but they need the children present and prepared.

Last week the three local normal schools hosted the NZ Normal And Model Schools’ Annual Conference here in Dunedin. The delegates were very impressed with the welcome they received. Speakers were mainly from Otago University but also included the Secretary of Education and the Director of the Teachers’ Council. The visitors also enjoyed visiting the butterflies at the Museum, the Chinese Gardens and they
especially enjoyed a cruise on the harbour which culminated in dinner at the Carey’s Bay Hotel. Thanks to the staff of NEV Normal who helped in the preparations and delivery of the conference.

13 October 2009 Term 4 Week 1 09/31

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa
Recent Events
The sad news overnight of the discovery of 2 year old Ashling Symes and the loss of life as a result of the Tsunami in Samoa and Tonga serve to remind us of the important things in life – to me they say: our futures are not able to be planned and nothing is for certain; what is important is each other and family and making the most of our lives.

This week the three Dunedin normal schools, NEV Normal, George St Normal and Tahuna Normal Intermediate, host the annual Normal And Model Schools’s Association Conference. We will be focusing on what we teach and how we teach; we will also be considering how we can best support the training of teachers.

One of the speakers at the conference is local businessman Ian Taylor. He told me what he has to say can be summed up in one sentence: Teach children how to think. Whilst I can see where he is coming from, I also think we need to teach children how to interpret this world in which we live. Whether we like it or not we cannot avoid
addressing the big questions of why are we here on this earth and what is the meaning of life; these are questions which spring to mind when we experience grief as well as when we celebrate success and milestones in life.

Mrs. Staynes and I were standing beside the school bell before school this morning and some of the youngest children in the school came up and started talking to us about Ashling Syme’s death – somehow as a school we need to be able to help children
explore these issues with children in an honest and authentic way, allowing them, as young as they are, to ask the awkward questions because surely such questions are the most important of all.

Na reira, ka mihi ahau ki te mokopuna kua hinga me nga tini mate o nga motu o Samoa me Tonga, haere ki te Rangimarie. Ki nga whanau pani, ka nui te aroha ki a koutou.

We express our sympathies especially to those in our school whanau who lost loved ones in the recent tragic events,

23 September 2009 Term 3 Week 10 09/30
Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa
What a busy last few days we are having. The puppet show on Friday was a huge success – congratulations to the talented artists who devised the programme and the performance. Congratulations as well to the teachers and children who worked so hard to make the event a memorable one. It’s great to see children engaging their hearts, minds and bodies in such activity.

On Monday the Malaysian parents provided the staff with lunch to celebrate the end of Ramadan. That too was a colourful and memorable event for those involved. Thanks to the families who made it possible and to Mrs Probert for her excellent work with international families who attend our school.

The Fortune Theatre arrived on Monday afternoon to perform a segment of their current play “The Day my Bum went Psycho”. This performance, predictably, went down well with the senior children!!!

Cross country may go ahead tomorrow depending on the weather – fingers crossed! Then it will be Friday and the end of yet another school term. Thanks to all for a great term and safe travels over the holidays!

Artists in Schools Performance
Friday 18 September ‘Puppet Day’ - the scene was set– time for the show. And what a show it was! The puppets were the stars (or were the children the stars?). It was amazing that so much was accomplished in such at short space of time. As well as the children making the puppets and taking part in the show, they learned so many new skills. All the five Key Competencies that we have been working on in school (Thinking, Managing Self, Relating to Others, Participating and Contributing, Using
Language, Symbols and Texts) were evident during the project. It was also fun!!! We thank Kaitrin, Drew and Anna for their enthusiasm and their expertise.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Parent Meeting
Thank you to those parents and caregivers who attended this meeting on Monday evening. The programme will be taught by the Police Education Officer, John Somerfield and the class teachers during the first two weeks of Term 4. 15 September 2009 Term 3 Week 9 09/29

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa
School is usually a busy place but seems busier than normal at present. Parents who pop into school during the day will see children engaged in a number of activities: watering plants in their class gardens; walking tall puppets about the schoolyard as they prepare for the puppet performance this coming Friday; playing all sorts of games, especially enjoying various forms of soccer and rugby using the new posts on the top field. The sunny days certainly lend themselves to more outdoor activities.

I attended a conference on student engagement last week. Student engagement is defined by academics in high falutin language but put simply is when children bring their hearts, bodies and minds to learning. The aim of teachers is to fully engage
children in school life so they achieve their potential. When I was listening to the conference speakers, I was delighted to hear that the things research show helps children to be engaged are things we do well here at NEV Normal: we have small class sizes, especially at the junior end of the school; we try to ensure children enjoy success from the minute they arrive so they feel good about learning; we provide a wide range of support mechanisms for children who struggle (e.g.: reading recovery, learning support, social worker, after school club, the Valley project etc…); we connect the learning with real life; we have clear discipline policies; we set goals with children; we get them to reflect on their learning; we especially help new comers settle in…. the list goes on.

While we can always improve our practice, I am satisfied that we already go a long way to ensure success for the students who attend this school!

Swine Flu
The school has had a number of reports of school family members with swine flu-like symptoms and just yesterday a confirmed case amongst the staff. Please be aware that this flu is around our community and can endanger those who have existing medical issues. Please keep your child at home if he or she has the flu. I have been told that the medical authorities are not interested in diagnosing whether people have the swine flu – I would advise parents to ignore this and get your child to a doctor and insist the doctor make a thorough diagnosis. The reports I have from people who have this flu is that it is a particularly nasty bug to have.

Teacher Only Day
The teaching staff held the second Ministry approved Teacher Only Day at Puketeariki Marae, Karitane yesterday. Why did we meet there you may ask? There are a number of reasons:We hope to take the children on a marae visit next year – probably in term 2 – and we wanted to do some preparatory work with the coordinator of marae visits;
We wanted to use the new curriculum as a framework for planning this visit;
We also wanted to see how we could incorporate local Kai Tahu elements into our planning;Maori and Pasifika children throughout NZ are performing below the rest of the children in literacy and numeracy and schools have been challenged by the Ministry of Education to lift our performance for these groups. I am happy to report that Maori and Pasifika children at NEV Normal are doing as well as anyone else according to our achievement data but we have to remain vigilant for any change in this area.

The marae at Karitane is beautiful. It is decorated in a number of different styles and most of the carvings and artworks depict stories of the local hapu and iwi. The complex has a commanding view of Karitane, the beaches and surrounding hills.

We were welcomed warmly by the locals including the coordinator of the marae experience for schools, Diana Mules. Diana led us through what we could do with the children during the school visit. Diana also shared ideas with us about how we could maximise the experience in terms of learning.

During one of the discussions, I pointed out that a cousin of mine holidays every year in Tuscany but said to me that he had never been to a marae and would love to do so. I find this sad as a marae is an important part of our culture.

Parents and extended family will be welcome to participate in the marae trip with us next year.
