Newsletter 29 June 2010 Term 2 Week 11 10/20
Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Last Week of Term 2
The shortest day has come and gone. So too has Term 2. The two week holiday is a chance for the teachers to take a breather and for the children to sleep in.

The senior classrooms should be ready for occupation sometime in the first week back. The teachers and children have been both tolerant and patient working in temporary spaces surrounded by noise and busy workmen. They will enjoy the reward of moving into bright, cheerful and upgraded accommodation.

We hope to hold a celebration early next year to celebrate the school’s 160th birthday. By that stage we hope to have all building work completed and will have an official ‘reopening’ or dedication of these upgraded facilities.

On behalf of the staff I wish our school families a restful and safe holiday.

Ma te Atua e mannaaki tiaki tatau katoa.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Gifted and Talented Centre
The school is seriously considering a request by a local group to host a gifted and talented kids centre.

The group represents schools and parents from around the city who want to provide extension work for their gifted and talented children. The children would travel from their school to NEV Normal one day a week for the class.

The Board of Trustees would employ the teachers and provide a classroom space but the costs would be borne by the organising group.

The Board welcome any feedback from parents regarding this initiative. Please contact the school office to register your idea or opinion.

Building Matters
The senior block is nearing completion and hopefully the classes will be able to move back in by the start of next term. This block has been strengthened to a new seismic level; each classroom will be repainted, reclad, carpeted and the top two classes will have heat pumps installed.

Next on the agenda is the College Block which will also be strengthened and some areas refurbished. Both blocks and the admin block will be repainted on the outside.

Once all of this work is done the two prefab rooms used by the community will be relocated at the end of the car park. The entrance to the hall will be improved and a new play and picnic area developed in the space vacated by the prefabs.

Thanks to the children and the teachers for their patience during this major project. We hope to have all building and beautification work completed by April 2011 at which time we will celebrate the school’s 160th anniversary!

Marae Trip
The weather held out for us on Thursday and we had a wonderful trip to Karitane to visit Puke Te Raki Marae. The marae complex overlooks the settlement and the views of the coastline and ocean are spectacular.

The marae is a modern building with very modern artworks adorning the entrance way and the buildings. The children were treated to a formal welcome after which we all shared morning tea. After the formalities local tutors taught the children weaving, string games and local history.

Many thanks to the marae whanau and to the parent helpers for their support.

Thank you to those parents who paid the $12.50 cost of the trip. Please send payment to school with your child if your child’s activity donation has not been paid up to T2 at least.

Next PTA Meeting
The next PTA meeting will be held Tuesday June 15th at 3.15pm in the Parents Room. All welcome to attend.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Whether it’s the ‘Swine-flu’ or any other major community illness or emergency, it is how well prepared we are that matters. Do you have an emergency plan that even your young children can follow?

We should all have 3 days supply of food at home, plus essential things for managing illnesses, such as cough mixtures, tissues and Paracetamol. There is nothing worse than going to the supermarket when you are unwell or have sick children with you.

Be prepared for colds and influenza this winter because you can almost guarantee that someone in your home will get a cold. Flu vaccinations are free for people over 65, or for anyone with chronic health conditions.

If you are unsure the NEVN Public Health Nurse is: Julie Buxton. Contact details: Phone 4769853. Cell 0273322784.
