30 April 2012   Term 2 Week 2     12/11

Learning Power Tip of the Week

Lots of sleep + good healthy food = smart learning!

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who have been helping with the swimming programme. Thanks also to the PTA for securing some funding to offset the costs of the swimming bus and tuition.

We take swimming lessons seriously. On average 105 Kiwis die from drowning each year. We want our children to learn to be safe in the water.

Our programme obviously works for those who see it through from an early age - Jill Clarke tests the
children at the beginning of each block and invariably the at risk children are children who did not start their schooling at NEV Normal.

So, again, thanks to the helpers who ensure the children are quickly dried and dressed after their
lessons.
Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie
Principal

Welcome
Welcome to Gabriel who has started in R11, Brianna who has started in R10 and Allen who has started in R2. We welcome their families to our school community.

Cross Country
Correction to the results of the cross country. Finn Abey came 2nd in the Y2 Boys race. Well done Finn!

T2 Swimming Block
Swimming continues all this week. Children need to bring togs, towels and goggles to school each day. Please ensure your child’s school activity donation has been paid for Term 2 at least as this donation helps to pay for the bus and the cost of tuition.

Rainbow Class
Our transition to school class for 4 year olds which is taken by our new entrant teacher, Mrs Cleland, is being held this Thursday from 1.15 to 2.45pm in R11. If you have a 4 year old who would like to join this class please contact Mrs Cleland or the office.

Elgregoe Performance
Elgregoe the magician returns to NEV Normal on Wednesday for a whole school performance. His show teaches key values that educate students about how to treat others and has a strong emphasis on anti bullying. Using tricks, puppets, ventriloquism, music, song, stories and amazing props (including live birds), the important messages are conveyed to the children in a fun, fast-paced show. The cost of the show is $4.00 which is paid out of the school activity donation. If you have not paid your child’s donation up to the end of Term 2 at least please send $4.00 to school with your child or pay at the school office.

Newsletter 23 April 2012

23 April 2012 Term 2 Week 1 12/10 Dear Parents & Caregivers Kia ora koutou katoa Teaching is a lot like parenting at times - there are good days and not so good days; things can go really well for a while then for no apparent reason everything turns to custard! As parents we need to remember that children grow and change - what worked last month may no longer be as effective today. It’s the same with teaching. Sure, there are some basic strategies that seem reliable but the nature of children and the fact that they change as they grow mean teachers have to constantly ask “Is what we are doing working?” If the answer is no them we have to change tack. We have made some changes in our break times to reflect changes in the way children behave during breaks. The new breaks are outlined below. Morning Break Snack time: inside or outside Syndicate/teacher supervised 10.30-10.40am Playtime: duty teacher 10.40-11.00am Lunch Lunch: compulsory 12.30-12.45pm supervised by teacher in classroom on cold days supervised by the duty teacher on fine days Playtime: 12.45-1.10pm supervised by duty teacher First bell toilet and drink 1.10pm Second bell 1.15pm Afternoon Break (Optional) Teacher supervised 2.00 -2.10pm In or outside plus toilet break Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki. Dear Parents & Caregivers

Some Misbehaviour in the Playground
The teachers have noticed an increase recently in the number of incidents of misbehaviour in the playground. The main culprits are senior boys who seem less interested in soccer and basketball and more interested in games loosely based on X-Box type games.

As a result the senior staff have :
developed plans to shorten the lunch hour;
arranged for Sport Otago to do some coaching with the older children;
sought advice from our Police Education Officer about how to deal with the increasing prevalence of children playing inappropriate X-Box and on-line games.

We have also called in a number of parents to discuss their child’s behaviour. We keep thorough records on behaviour. If you are concerned about your child’s behaviour or are keen to know if he or she is getting up to mischief at school please ask the classroom teacher or Mrs Staynes.

It is always helpful to keep good lines of communication open with your child. Ask them how they behave at school and if they get praised or told off for their actions.

On behalf of the staff I would like to wish all school families a happy Easter and a safe and restful holiday.

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.
