Newsletter 8 May 2013

8 May 2013         Term 2 Week 1                    13/12

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Welcome to Term 2
The new term is well underway. Swimming lessons have begun and will continue until next Thursday.

The school boiler is cranked up and the classrooms are warm and cosy. We have an abundance of bird life around the school and so enjoy constant bird song. Thanks to Mrs Hesson, R3 are adding to the sweet sounds of nature with their valiant attempts at mastering that melodic instrument, the recorder!

Mrs Will is off on a sabbatical for the term and we welcome back Mrs Robyn Cleland. Mrs Cleland will take the new entrant class for the term and we will operate two new entrant classes when Mrs Will returns.

Mrs Kewene-Edwards had a major operation in the holidays and will return to work next week. Mrs Kieser is teaching in R5 in her absence.

The Board of Trustees have decided to increase all teacher-aide and cleaners’ wages to what has been termed the ‘living wage’. This is $18.40 per hour. The Trustees really value the work that our teacher aides and cleaners do and want to acknowledge this by paying them accordingly. For more information on the living wage idea visit livingwagenz.org.nz

Board elections are nearly upon us. Please consider stepping up to do your bit for the school and the community.

Kia Kaha tatou Katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie
Principal

Over Week 2 and 3 John Somerfield, our Police Education Officer, will be taking children in the senior school for bike safety. This will cover bike and helmet checks, road safety, theory and practical knowledge.

Child’s Bike
A child’s bike with trainer wheels and a helmet were left in the school grounds over the holidays. Mr Harvey kindly locked them away. If you know the owner please enquire a the office.

SunSmart Schools
Even though the sunny days continue, it’s now the time of year to put the sun hats and sunscreen away. Thanks for being SunSmart last term, it has been a summer to remember!

During Terms 2 and 3 the ultraviolet radiation levels are much lower, reducing the risk of skin or eye damage. In fact it is important to get some winter sun onto your skin. Sunlight on the skin produces vitamin D, which is necessary for strong bones and general good health. So get outside and enjoy the winter sun.

Taking a trip to the snow? At altitude, ultraviolet radiation levels are higher. Remember hats, SPF 30+ sunscreen and sunglasses when on the slopes.

Learning Power Tip of the Week
“Parents read to your children often;
they enjoy stories and so will you.”

Netball
Netball commences this term. Many thanks to Mrs Hesson and Sacha Turnbull for organising and coaching the teams. Please ensure your child’s netball fees are paid as soon as possible.

We seem to be missing some netball skirts. If you have one at home please return to school as soon as possible.

Flippaball Results
Congratulations to the Tuna team who gained 3rd place in their competition at the end of last term.

Mrs Hesson would like to thank the Flippaballers and parents for the generous gift presented to her at assembly. It was very much appreciated. Mrs Hesson would also like to thank parents who assisted with the games and for getting children to practices and to Moana Pool.
