4 May 2010 Term 2 Week 3 10/12

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

The new Board of Trustees held their first meeting last night. It was a welcome and orientation meeting with former Board Chair Mike Wright invited to speak about ways of running an effective Board.

At the close of nominations four nominations had been received for the five parent representative positions. These four people were then duly elected as parent representatives. They are:
Steve O’Connor, who has been elected Chair of the new board. Steve is a former pastor of the NEV Baptist Church and now is electorate secretary for Labour MP Claire Curran. Steve has 2 sons at NEV Normal, Jack in R5 and Cameron in R2. Steve has been a board member since 2004.

Jo Howard has been a board member since 2007. Her daughter Celeste is in R5. Jo divides her time between working as a potter and working as a librarian on the book bus.

Jesseme Jones has been a board member since 2009. She has a preschool aged daughter and her son Oliver is in R2. Jesseme was active on the last board promoting the establishment of the parents meeting room in the hall and liaising with agencies to make available information displayed in this room.

The board welcomed new member Paul McDowell. Paul’s daughter Silva is in R2. Paul is an English teacher at Otago Boys’ High School.

Other members of the board are John McKenzie, as principal, and a staff representative yet to be appointed. The vacant parent representative position will be discussed at the next meeting to be held on Monday 24 May. A farewell to retiring board members will be held at this meeting. Members of the school community are welcome to attend this meeting.
