Newsletter 28 May 2012

28 May 2012   Term 2 Week 6  12/15

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa
Last Wednesday at about 3.15pm I happened to go to the school hall for some reason. As I approached the hall I heard a group of boys, mostly from DNI, who were skating by the school archway using foul language. I growled at these boys and they took off (not without a bit of cheek too!). I noticed some adults about at the time and wondered why they hadn’t also told these boys to watch their language.

If you see children swearing or misbehaving before or after school please correct them - if they are cheeky in response, let one of the teachers know and we will follow up on it. If, as in this case, the children come from another school, I will contact the principal of that school to complain.

Adults challenging such behaviour reinforces for children that we live in a community; that we have commonly held values; that we are connected and look our for each other. If we don’t correct children (or each other for that matter), we give tacit approval to misbehaviour.

Swimming Block Results: JC Swim School Report

It is well documented that New Zealand's drowning toll is a disgrace. At three times the per-capita rate of the United Kingdom and Canada and twice that of Australia, it remains the ugly stain on our acclaimed aquatic wonderland status. JC Swim is committed to ensuring children will have a greater chance of survival through a well structured learn to swim programme. We give the children the opportunity to fall into water, eliminating the shock incident and teach good technique in all strokes to ensure children can gain distance. We also applaud your commitment to ensuring your children have the opportunity to learn water safety skills.

Non confident swimmers were taught breath control, float coordination, independence-whole-stroke. Floaters practiced basic techniques in freestyle and backstroke for retention. Beginner breathers developed the whole stroke and advanced swimmers were taught breaststroke and improved freestyle and back stroke through a technique and endurance programme.

Individual swimmers results are marked on the evaluation sheets. Thank you for participating in our programme.
