Newsletter 13 November 2012

13 November 2012    Term 4 Week 5    12/34

Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

Teacher Union Meetings
The primary teachers’ union, the NZEI, is holding meetings across the country to brief teachers about the latest pay round. Some schools have closed for these meetings but we have managed to stay open by spreading out the staff attendance over 2 meetings and with help from part time and management staff.

Thanks to all those who have stepped up to help out - it makes it much less hassle for parents if we can manage it this way.

Friday Book Character Day
The idea for dressing up as a book character is that children and parents create a costume as much as possible from what already exists in the home, so please don’t head off and spend money on this
activity.

Also the character should be from a book not from TV, movie or a game.

Novopay
Parents will have heard about the problems schools have been experiencing with the new school staff payroll system. The stories on the TV and the paper are not exaggerated and our operation has had and continues to have issues with payment of staff. Whilst teething problems are sure to be expected, the new system has been nothing short of a nightmare for our office manager. Let’s hope the Ministry improve things for the new year!

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie
Principal

Welcome
Welcome to Kainamu who has started in R11. We welcome his family to our school community.

School Swimming Block
There were several items of lost property handed into the office after school swimming - vests, undies sox and tights.

Flippaball Results
Our flippaball teams played on Sunday. Mrs Hesson reports that all 3 games were lost but again the
children played very well.

5 Minute Car Parks in Longworth Street
Please respect the 5 minute parks in Longworth Street. We have had reports that some parents are waiting in these parks for some time when picking children up after school.

Wheels Day
This Friday lunchtime is the turn of the junior classes to ride bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Hospice Mural
Simon Kaan and other artists worked with a group of children on Friday creating a collage which will be used as part of a mural at the hospice. The children created Pacific turtles, Asian dragons and Maori
tuatara.

Hiwi the Kiwi Fishing Show
Children and staff thoroughly enjoyed this show presented by the Minstrel and Mrs Minstrel. Its theme was fishing and being safe around the water & the sustainability of resources from the sea.

Public Health Nurse Information

Bed Times
Children need a good night’s sleep so that they have enough energy for the next day’s activities. Sleep is not only necessary for bodies it is important for our brains. Children cannot fight colds and viruses when they are tired. Research has shown links between lack of sleep and learning and behaviour problems in school age children.

Rather than appearing tired, children who do not get enough sleep at night may display the opposite signs, bouncing around, being unable to concentrate, losing interest quickly and even becoming uncooperative, irritable and angry.

Children may not be a good judge of how much sleep they need; they may not recognise they are tired. Children of primary school age may require 11 or 12 hour’s sleep. Suggested bedtimes for 5 to 11 year olds are 7pm to 8. 30pm. Generally 12 years old needs only 10 hours. A good bedtime routine will help.

If parents are having difficulty with the children’s bedtime routines they can discuss these with the local public health nurse or GP.

The Public Health Nurse for our school is: Catherine Moir, Phone 4769748.
