Newsletter 10 May 2011

10 May 2011 Term 2 Week 2 11/10

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Computers in Home Opportunity
Attached to this newsletter you will find information about the Computers in Homes initiative. 28 families in the Valley who do not have a computer at home can apply to be part of this scheme. If accepted, you get 20 hours of training and when you graduate your family is presented with a computer. There is an entry fee of $50.00. Applications must be in as soon as possible as the training starts later this month.

This is a great scheme so get your application into the school office.

Salvation Army Appeal
The Sallies have been running their annual appeal lately. Parents may not know that the local Salvation Army pastor, Nolan Hill, and his team work with many of the school families. They are great to work with - no fuss and no hassle, they just get in and do stuff for people in need.

For the last 2 years they have run an activity club for some of our children out of the school hall; they provide transport help to some children; they
organise buddies for others.

Therefore I urge parents to consider making a donation to their annual appeal - money can be left at the office.

John McKenzie
Principal

Welcome
We welcome Michael and Nehana who have started in R11. A warm welcome to their families to our school community.

T2 Swimming Block
Swimming continues this week until Thursday 12 May. Thank you to all those parents and caregivers who have assisted with helping the children to get changed.

School Activities
The cost for many of our school activities is funded by the school activity donation. A statement has been sent home with this newsletter if your child’s activity donation has not paid for T2 at least. Please make payment at the office. A receipt will be issued which can be used to claim back some tax through Inland Revenue.

Whanau Hui
There will be a whanau hui to review the Bi-lingual unit next Monday 16 May at 5pm
in the staffroom. All are welcome to attend.

Smart Food School Lunches
Smart Food lunches are available on Mondays and Thursdays at NEVNS. The lunch consists of two sandwiches, a piece of fruit, a home made biscuit or muffin and a jelly or milk pudding. The cost is $3, or $4 for a larger lunch with two extra
sandwiches. Orders and money need to be in to the School Office by 9am.

Rainbow Class
Our transition to school class for 4 year olds is being held this Thursday 12 May in R11 from 1.15-2.45pm. If you have a 4 year old who would like to join this class please contact Mrs Will or the office.

Assembly
Assembly will be held in the hall this Friday at 2.20pm. Assembly will be led by R5 with items by Rooms 3 & 10.

Change of Date
The fish and chips/maths evening has been changed to Wednesday 1 June as the mathematics facilitator was not available. Furth details will follow.

Volunteers Needed HPP Programme
HPP (He awhiawhi tamariki ki to panui pukapuka, which translates as ‘helping children embrace reading books’) is an oral language programme in which adult volunteer tutors read to children three days a week for a ten week period.

In order for this programme to be successful we need the help of volunteers from the community to act as tutors. Tutors need to be able to commit to a ten week block of time, spending 3 half hour sessions with a child per week. There will be training
provided for anyone interested in becoming a tutor. If you are interested please contact Fiona Will at school. Thank you.

Snow/Wintry Conditions
On especially wintery mornings please remember to check radio stations/cancellation line for any school closure or delayed start notices. Alternatively ring school as a message will be left on the answer phone if there is a delayed start.

If you do choose to keep your child at home please ring and leave a message on the school answer phone. Local radio stations most commonly used for cancellations are Newstalk ZB 1044AM, 4XO 1206AM, Radio Dunedin 1305AM, Classic Hits 89FM. The cancellation line number is 474 8426. Please take a note of these details.

PTA News
School Banking with NZCU South
Thank you to everyone who has shown an interest in getting involved in school banking. For those that have already handed in your application forms; a banking book will be sent to you in the mail. After this your child can start bringing his/her banking book and money to school and putting it into the banking box in the office each Wednesday morning.

If you haven’t filled in an application form and would still like to do so; there are spare forms in the office which you can fill out and either drop into the banking box in the office, or, take into NZCU South. Remember banking day is WEDNESDAY! It’s not how much your child banks – what’s important is getting into a good savings habit (even if it is just 10c each week).

PTA Meeting
The next meeting will be held on today Tuesday May 10th at 3.15pm. All are welcome to attend and new members are always keenly sought.
