Newsletter 2 July 2013

2 July 2013                      Term 2 Week 9                                 13/20

Dear Parents and Caregivers
Kia ora koutou katoa

As the term comes to a hasty end I would like to remind parents of some of our school policies and expectations.

1. Homework
Homework is not compulsory. Our school policy is very clear about this. Research shows that homework may not assist a child’s learning. It is our hope as teachers that homework gives parents an idea of what children are learning at school. It should not be something that adds stress to family life. If it does, then flag it and explain this to the classroom teacher.

2. Attendance
If a child is going to be absent for more than a couple of days for a holiday or for some other reason, we require formal notification for our records. Most people write a note explaining the planned absence in advance.

3. Lateness
Perennial lateness is not conducive to good learning. School starts at 8.55am. The teacher takes the roll at that point. Then she/he will usually outline the order of the day ahead and revisit lessons or issues from the previous day. Often there will be current events and other news exchanged at this point. Children who come late miss this important scene-setting slot.

4. Early Arrivals
The classroom teachers are in their rooms from 8.30am. Parents who for some reason or another need to drop their child off earlier than this must let the classroom teacher know so the teacher can keep an eye on the child.

5. Afternoon Departure
Children are in the care of teachers (in loco parentis) until the child has either been handed over to the parent (or his or her agent) or when the child reaches home. We need to know if you are going to be late collecting your child; again this is for safety reasons. Just phone the office and alert us to your situation.

Finally
Most of the above points are based around safety or courtesy. We are always happy to discuss with parents any causes for lateness or non-attendance. We can usually help if help is required. We are happy to watch children when a parent has been held up or if you need your child to come to school before 8.30am. Just let us know, that’s all!

Kia Kaha tatou Katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie
Principal

Welcome
Welcome to James who has started in R11.

Rainbow Class
This Thursday is the final transition to school class for T2. It will be held in R11 from 1.15-2.45pm.

Wheels Days
This Friday lunchtime is the turn of the senior classes to ride their bikes, scooters, skateboards etc at school. Children who bring their bikes will need to wear a helmet. It is recommended that children wear a helmet when riding their scooters or skateboards.

Assembly
This Friday afternoon Sinclair McLaren (Caitlin’s uncle) will be performing a music demonstration for the children. Sinclair will be taking the senior school from 1.15-2pm; then the junior school from 2-2.45pm. Following this there will be a very short assembly from 2.45-3pm.

Toy/Book Fundraiser (last day of T2)
Next Friday 12th July, there will be no assembly. A toy sale is planned instead with proceeds being donated to Child Cancer.

Children bring unwanted toys and books in good condition to school on Thursday which will be sold on Friday during assembly time. Children bring some money to school on Friday to make their purchases.

Found
An ethnic/African style necklace found in Longworth Street has been handed into the office.

Lost/Stolen
The red trolley/cart used by the children at lunchtime has disappeared from the sports shed. If anyone has seen it or knows of its whereabouts please let the office know.

Activity Donation
Please ensure that your child’s activity donation is paid up until the end of T2 at least.

Advance Notice
Next term during Week 2, parent/teacher interviews will be held. These will be 2 way interviews without children attending. An appointment notice will be sent home.

Lost Property
Again as the end of term approaches, our lost property bin is full to overflowing! The bin is located by the stairwell between R2 and R3 in the senior block. If your child is missing items of clothing please check the bin before the end of term.

Learning Power Tip of the Week
