Welcome back to the new term.

School Roll
Our roll is lower than we had expected it to be by about 10 children. While this has no immediate impact on our staffing or status, it does upset our ongoing roll growth plan.

The best way to ensure we keep a strong roll is to promote the school to prospective parents. Word-of-mouth is the best form of marketing our great school. I ask all parents and grandparents and caregivers to spread the good news about NEV Normal.

The office has promotional material available. I am happy to show prospective parents around the school. Mrs Will is also available to meet anyone who is considering where to school their children.

If you have any ideas about ways we can better promote the school, please let us know!

Welcome
A very warm welcome to Hendrix, Satine and Clarice who have started in R11. We also
welcome the College teachers who have started their posting in all classes.

School Swimming
School swimming commences tomorrow. The swimming timetable has been included in this newsletter. The cost of this swimming block is $20 per child which is paid out of the school activity donation. If your child’s activity donation has not been paid up to Term 2 at least please make payment at the school office. Thank you.

Assembly
A special Anzac Day Assembly will be held this Friday at 2.20pm. It will be led by Room 2 with items by Rooms 5 & 8. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend.

School Activity Donation
Please make payment of the school activity donation for Term 2. The School continues to be happy for payment to be made termly, or by arrangement with the school office. If you would like to set up an automatic payment please contact the office.

A receipt will be issued and can be used with the
donations part of your tax return.

Smart Food School Lunches
Smart Food lunches are available on Mondays and Thursdays at NEVNS. The lunch consists of two sandwiches, a piece of fruit, a home made biscuit or muffin and a jelly or milk pudding for $2.50; larger lunch with two extra sandwiches for $3.50. Orders and money need to be in to the School Office by 9am.

Scholastic Book Club
Leaflets for Issue 3 will be sent home this week. Orders with money need to be handed to the office by Friday 7 May. Please make cheques payable to Scholastic NZ.


Annual Whanau Hui

Parents and caregivers are invited to attend the annual whanau hui consultation meeting to discuss the future of Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga on Thursday 29 April from 4.30pm-6.30pm in the school staffroom.

The agenda will include a report on the recent visit to the Te Reo classes at St Albans school in Christchurch.

Board of Trustees Election 2010

Nominations are invited for the election of 5 parent representatives to the board of trustees. A nomination form and a copy of this notice has been posted to all eligible voters. Additional nomination forms can be obtained from the school office.

There are still vacancies that need to be filled.

Nominations close at noon this Friday 23 April and may be accompanied by a candidate’s statement.

The voting roll is open for inspection at the school and can be viewed during normal school hours.

There will also be a list of candidates’ names, as they come to hand, for inspection at the school.

The poll closes at noon on Friday 7 May 2010.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service
Sunday 25 April.

On ANZAC Day children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of returned and service personnel are invited to march to the Cenotaph for the Dawn Service of Remembrance at the Queens Gardens. The parade assembles at 6am and the march commences at 6.15am. The assembly area is at the Crawford Street-Lower Rattray Street intersection. The dress is school uniform with a poppy. Children can wear their next of kin medals on the right side of the chest.

Poppy Day
Poppies are available this Friday for a gold coin donation. The money raised from poppy sales goes to the returned services welfare fund.

Welcome back to Term 2. We hope everyone had a lovely holiday!

Jack’n’Jill Portraits
The photo shoot will be on Saturday 8th May. Please have a look at the information that will be coming home soon. There is a maximum of 50 families being booked for the day, so be in quick with your booking!

The next PTA meeting will be held today, April 20th, at 3.15pm in the Parents Room. All welcome to attend.

Community News
Community Orchard – Fruit and Nut Tree Workshops on Saturday 24th April - Free! Jason Ross from Sutherland Nursery will visit two sites in NEV to meet with interested locals, ahead of fruit and nut tree planting in June. He will explain how to choose what species and cultivars are suitable for a site and how to
prepare for planting. Come along to a site near you! 12pm Chingford Park, by the sports ground; then at the southeast corner of the park, past the old swimming pool, near the stream. 1pm top of Calder Ave, NEV. Tree species being considered are hazelnut, chestnut, walnut, elderberry, mulberry, apple, pear, plum. If you have produce made from any of these, please bring along a little to share and your recipe! Final decisions about what to plant will be made after these workshops and the trees will be planted in June.

Kiwi Kids Learn: A new educational magazine has been launched for parents and caregivers to support their children to be all they can be. Kiwi Kids Learn is a fantastic resource and full of useful information to use with school age or preschool children. Kiwi Kids Learn also includes two sections specifically for kids. There is a dedicated 8-page lift-out for the kids with activities and games. There is also a section within the magazine for students to ‘showcase’ their work to the rest of New Zealand.
